So, Forbes magazine just released an article stating that Calgary will become Canada's next world city based on economic. Ugh. As if that city doesn't get enough phony praise as it is. Yes, if you haven't figured it out, I strongly dislike that city for many reasons, and now after reading this article, the phony citizens of Calgary will now have even more excuses to boast about their over-rated burg and continue to make statement like "Oh God your from Winnipeg, the place where migrating water foul sh1t over whilst flying south for the winter? So sorry to hear that." Can't wait.

I lived in Calgary for 18 months, and I must say I loved it. I can name several reasons why I would consider Calgary superior to Winnipeg as a city:

  • an NHL team
  • an LRT
  • lower crime rate
  • better downtown
  • better bike trails
  • more pedestrian-friendly
  • better infrastructure (especially roads)
  • higher ranked post secondary educational facilities
  • close proximity to mountains
  • chinooks and warmer weather
  • friendlier (I learned "Friendly" Manitoba was a myth long ago)
  • citizens seem to have far more civic pride
  • much younger median age of Calgarians
  • the Stampede
  • many more I cannot think of...

The things that make Winnipeg superior to Calgary as a city:

  • cheaper housing
  • shorter commute to city centre from suburbs
  • the Exchange District
  • Assiniboine Park & Forest
  • close proximity to Lakes and Beaches

Now let me address the myth of Calgarians ragging on Winnipeg. The only Calgarians who tend to do this are actually transplanted Winnipeggers, who for various reasons, left Winnipeg for Calgary. You will rarely ever hear a native Calgarian harping on Winnipeg.
Calgarians have a huge rivallary with Edmonton. Winnipeg is just an afterthought to them. In my time, I met several people in Calgary who had tons on negative things to say about Winnipeg, but they were all born in Manitoba. Never did I hear anything negative about Winnipeg from a true Calgarian.

It takes two cities to create a rivallry. Winnipeggers seem to hate Calgarians. Calgarians have better things to do. It's really a one-way street. I know first-hand the cities Calgarians tend to despise, and Winnipeg would be lucky to make the top 10:
Most hated cities to a Calgarian:

  1. Edmonton (by a landslide)
  2. Toronto
  3. Vancouver
  4. Ottawa

After this it drops off considerably. Calgarians don't even think of Winnipeg. My question is why spend so much energy comparing Winnipeg to a city that is indifferent to us?

I'd rather live in Edmonton than Calgary.

I'm not sure where you get this notion Winnipeggers hate Calgary. I know in my circle of friends, family and business associates it NEVER is discussed. It gets discussed on boards like this mostly by others. People like EdWin, sputnik, HurtinAlbertin. What do those three have in common?

Whenever Calgary is mentioned on this forum, it is almost always put into a ngative light by some posters. When I (or others who have actually LIVED in Calgary defend it), we are crucified, and told to go back to Alberta. It's an inferiority complex Winnipeg has always had. If anyone mentions good things about Calgary or defends the city, they open themselves up to personal attacks.
A case in poin would be LivingDead, who obviously cannot debate in a civil manner.

I still don't buy the argument Winnipeggers hate Calgary. This board does not represent all of Winnipeg.

I dare say any negative criticisms offered are in response to something said.

As for being told to go back to Alberta... Ummm, how many times? Once eh? Recently too eh? Kinda smarted did it???

Peeps are sensitive HA, and you should both know why and understand it, because Calgary is always served up as this utopia that Winnipeg a) should always strive for; or 2) can never reach.

Tell ya what. Stop comparing the two centres and I'll bet all animosity disappears.

Most of my relatives and closest friends now live in Calgary.....I find myself visiting that city more often and have come to appreciate it in the over twenty two years that I have been a visitor. It is like comparing apples and oranges when comparing Calgary to here....different attitude, faster pace, more transient and younger populationa more corporate, resource-based economy and a far different climate and environment - the latter two being key to shaping us no matter where we choose to live. One could sit here for a long time and make pros and cons lists....why bother? I enjoy both cities and sometimes loathe both cities....depends on my mood I guess.

Actually, I like Calgary. I probably passed up a couple of chances to move there over the years, but theres a lot I like about it. Used to travel there for work on a regular basis back in the 80's. At this stage in my life, I really can't think about relocating anywhere, but I'll head back to Cowtown anytime, except Stampede week. Too much horseshit, literally.

I was being facetious when I made that joke, and will apologize profusely if you took offense. I don't hate Calgary and/or Calgarians at all. Just got sick of a certain individual and his "Calgary is better than everywhere, here's why..." crap.

Really, the only city I hate is Flint, Michigan due to past experiences there (as intimated in a previous post involving nukes).

My experience is that Calgarians are fast becoming the most arrogant citizens of any city in Canada, even more than Vancouver and Toronto. And no, it's not just ex-Winnipeggers living in Calgary that have that mentality, it is most Calgarians originally from anywhere on Earth from any walk of life. That is my personal experience when talking to Calgarians. I've lived in Calgary, and I couldn't wait to get the hell outta there when I could. Believe me, I do my research before I state the findings.

Actually...I've traveled quite a bit through/in Calgary (as a truck driver)

About the only thing I heard about Calgary (and extended through Alberta), is that they are basically American.

That their attitudes, values, structure, etc. are all American in nature...and not Canadian (not that there's REALLY that much difference).

Now...if you take that as offensive, I guess Calgarians don't like being compared to Americans Wink....but personally...I just think it adds to the diversity within Canada.

Traveling from one end of the Country to the other...you will find more than 20 recognized and accepted languages, DOZENS of cultures, and 38 Million different opinions Smile.

Edmontonians and Calgaryians have as much hatred as Israelis and palestineans, so your opinion does not carry much weight...

Oh really? I didn't know that I needed your approval to have a valid opinion, my Lord. Anyways, my opinion carries as much weight as yours does. So if my opinion means nothing, then neither does yours.

FYI, this is a subject I do not wish to debate. I just stated my personal opinion "I would rather live in Edmonton than Calgary". I am serious about that, I never said anything bad about Calgary or Toronto, I never jumped all over you and put you down for living in Regina or Trois Rivers.

Again; I have no intention to debate this. As for my civility, I was just answering GOM's question. He asked what you 3 had in common. I replied "you three share a single brain cell".
