They were amalgamated into Greyhound about 10 years ago.

hey, speaking of monopolies, how does Beaver Bus Lines get to operate from Wpg to Selkirk if Greyhound has a monoply in the province.?

They've tried stopping beaver. But have never been successful.

Nothing can stop a determined beaver. With or without Greyhound - I think I'll choose a route and compete.

beaver operates as a daily commuter bus much the same way Winnipeg transit does.

Do they get a subsidy?

hmm... not sure. I know I looked into it in 2005 when I was thinking of moving out that way.

Another great LTE. And maybe not a bad idea...

Let the post office run the buses
The Gazette
Published: 11 hours ago

Greyhound Canada's threat to halt service in rural Manitoba and northern Ontario and to review its routes in Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan, Yukon and the Northwest Territories is a golden opportunity for Canada Post to introduce a system of postal buses to carry mail and passengers between rural towns and rural post offices in Canada.

Postal buses would be a boon for small towns, where intercity buses are often the only form of transportation, and a possible new revenue source for Canada Post.

Postbuses are used in many European countries (Switzerland and Britain for example) and some African countries.

Have we become so accustomed to government taking care of us that we forgot how to think like entrpeneurs? Has government made it so difficult for someone to start up and run their own business that we can't see opportunities? Get rid of the monopoly, get rid of government over regulation and let free enterprise do what they are supposed to. This Greyhound thing is a problem brought on by excessive government interference and the solution is for the commies to back off and let the market decide. Like I said earlier, will they be dictating where I buy my underwear??

I hope not. Government underwear is know for being uptight and inflexible. And sometimes full of sh1te.

Let's say that there are 10,000,000 different seats being sold per year. Add $2 per seat and you have got your $15 million plus 5 million left over to look after the new safety rules that the govrnment is legislating to prevent a lunatic off his medications killing someone.
This would also cut back on the H1N1 swine flue pandemic and also global warming, and all at such a low cost.
This, I have been told is the base of the Liberal platform for the upcoming election, slated for Nov 16th!
See how simple the math is?

why not just let greyhound run its service wherever it wants and if it doesn't want to run along xyz route because of the lack of passengers, so be it??

city of winnipeg decides transit routes based on usage and volume, is someone on young street going to demand the bus comes by the front door next? no, they walk to portage or whatever and catch the closest one right?

why make a private company service customers who, based on the lack of volumes, illustrate they don't really justify said service?

Exactly, it was government interference that forced them into the unprofitable routes in the first place.

The Government of Canada and the Provincial Governments have no business getting their big fat noses involved in private business. The End.

If the good citizens living in Rivers, souris, altona etc... need bus service they can drive their car to the nearest big town and get on a bus at Brandon, Morden/Winkler etc... It is bad enough that the population of Winnipeg pays most of the taxes that provide these tiny hamlets with $$ to run their towns and provide $$ for their road maintenance.
