So with all this rain we have been getting, I am wondering what impact this has on our road/street construction crews?

I know from doing road construction depending what point on the project we were at and depending on how hard it was raining we just pretty much sat in the bunkhouse.

I also know we have alot of road/street construction going this year even just in the city and I have noticed a few places where the work seems to have started and then it just sits there with the signs up and no work going on. Anyone else noticing the same thing?

well...road work is a bit different than what we do...but has similar components.

demolition of roads can generally be done in the rain...but if there's any sign of lightening...crews close (except for emergency work).

and pouring new roads/concrete is almost impossible in the rain...(actually pointless, as it ruins the mix)...and if the ground is wet where the pour is being made...it won't set right either.

You mean that road projects may be delayed and take longer and that traffic will be screwed longer than necessary?? Boy, hope no one's too shocked over that headline.

heh... well this year is just ALOT worse then other years.... say... remember how there were contracts this year that offerred the companies a bonus if completed ahead of time? I wonder if they get an extension because of rain delays?

i know in our industry...weather delays are written in as part of the contract for extensions

as are other unforeseen things like finding asbestos, or having a mould issue.

road construction probably has those as well...and for things like finding broken water/sewer pipes...or hidden debris under the roads.

"hidden debris under the roads"

LOL.... man oh man... some of the things that are buried under roads.

I was talking to this one old road construction guy and he was telling me of the time that they were making a road through this bush and they had to dispose of the trees and moss that were torn down. They simply burned them of course and then built the road overtop, problem is the trees were not finished burning and smouldered for another two weeks. They actually made the road inspection guy come out early in the morning so that the fog would cover up the fact that smoke was still coming out in some places.

One worker apparently stole a car and came to work and they all "protected him" by burying the car in the road too. But that was a long long time ago.
