No they beat him up for false imprisonment.
How is he going to call the police? You know for a fact he has a cell phone?

Actually...the $.20 is irrelevant...the dollar amount is irrelevant at all.

Whether it was $.20 or $2M...the hockey player & his brother should not have attacked the cabbie...unless the cabbie threatened or attacked them first (locking them in the car is 1) impossible and 2) not threatening)

What they SHOULD have done...is made the cabbie call his dispatcher. The cabbie DOES have either a cell phone or a radio to reach dispatch. Once reached...he should've demanded arrangements be made to have the cabbie fired. Guaranteed the cabbie would find change...somewhere.

The assault is unwaranted, and the hockey kid should be charged. But the cabbie is at fault too (not as severe)...and Kane has grounds to have him charged with theft & false imprisonment (if those were the circumstances).

How is locking them in the car impossible?
Its rather easy to modify a vehicle to make it damn near impossible to get out.

With the 'child proof' rear doors that are becoming so common now, it's real easy to lock someone inside.

Yeah, I can see a hockey player having trouble with child proof doors. Very Happy

It's a car people...if I honestly felt someone was trying to lock me in a car...I would easily turn and kick out a window.

Did you know car manufacturers design windshields and rear windows to "pop" out? So if you kick them just right...they should come out.

And this guy is a hockey player...he could probably have done it with his head.

Not to mention the fact that (child lock or no), there's probably still a stem to pull up to unlock the door. If you can grab that...and unlock it...the door will open.

Being locked in the backseat of a car is not really "imprisonment"...it's more like temporary annoyance.

Now see...THAT'S what he should have done though...kicked out a window instead of attacking the cabbie. That comes out of the cabbie's pocket for repairs...and Kane could've charged him with robbery if the cabbie tried to sue him.

Yes I have...and they are DESIGNED to not be "escapable"...they also cost thousands of dollars more to make than a "standard" vehicle.

Sorry you misunderstood, I was more interested in the story rather than the technical aspects of the cars. Smile

I've seen several episodes of COPS where the handcuffed dude broke the window rather easily. But we are all leaping to the conclusion this cab was designed as escape-proof. I wonder if that would even be illegal. Imagine being trapped in the backseat of a cab that was in an accident and you can't get out...

how else is he going to call police from inside a locked vehicle, bat-signal? Or is this one of those super luxury cabs that has built in phones for the patrons?

of course it would be illegal.. does not mean for one moment that a cab driver would not do it. He already attemted to rob the player and possibly held him against his will... whats to say he wont go a little further and place all occupants at risk in an accident?

Why would he have to call from the car. Hand over the twenty cents he was being robbed of, get released, then phone the police from a pay phone.

Oooo, I think I know what Kane was afraid of. Duh.

Kane was a kidnapping victim and likely believed that if he handed over the twenty cent ransom that he would be killed because kidnappers always kill their victims. No witnesses.

" Hand over the twenty cents he was being robbed of, get released, then phone the police from a pay phone."

and be charged for abusing 911 like the lady who called 911 because McDonalds refused to refund her money?

I really dont get it GOM, you are saying its perfectly reasonable for anyone to hold anyone hostage for money and they should pay that money and then complain to the police, instead of trying to resolve the problem on their own when they know they can best their captor.

I did not say it was reasonable to hold anyone hostage.

Here is what I'm saying: DON'T BEAT ANYONE UP FOR TWENTY CENTS! Frick principle. Dude was a complete icehole.

What I don't get is why you are so insistent on making this such a heinous crime by the cabbie.

TWENTY CENTS!!!

The cabbie attempted to hold them illegally. Regardless of his reason that is a pretty damn heinous crime.

Twenty cents that will cost millions in the long run in terms of possible censure and loss of future endorsement opportunities.....stupid, plain macho stupidity.
