I freakin hate cab drivers who supposedly "dont have the right change"

Where does the felony robbery come in I wonder?

I'd bet this all relates back to alcohol...and he'll end up getting community service and alcohol "rehab" treatment.

I'm wondering what others would do/say in that situation? Would you just wave it off and say "forget the $.20"? or would you file a protest with the cab company?

Personally...the few times I've taken a cab...I've "tipped" the driver...so usually add a couple bucks to the fare...but if he told me he didn't have change for me? I think I'd not consider tipping then...and then call his company and demand my money back or have the driver charged with theft.

Seems like a kid who got drunk and went overboard...though all the details aren't out yet.

I seem to recall legislation recently passed in Manitoba that requires the cabbies to have proper change at all times or the ride is free?

But that could be another area I am thinking about.

In the past when that has happened (no change) I gave my card to the driver and told him to call me when he has change....funny how they somehow manage to find some money on them....

This no-change thing seems to be a favorite scheme for some cabbies eh.

$0.20??? Throw the kid in jail for a few weeks. He needs a little attitude adjustment.

Throw the cabbie in jail to for attempted robbery. He did try to steal something.

By that reasoning...the kid should win an argument of "self-defence" Wink

It really depends doesn't it?

If the cabbie said... I have no change... and the kid said.. fine no money for you... and went to leave the cab... but the cabbie locked and would not let the kid out..

without knowing the whole storey its really hard to say what happened, but I can see this kid getting off completely once his lawyer gets involved.

No matter. It was twenty cents. All this for twenty cents?

All this for a penny.

It's not a matter of the $.20...it's a matter of principle. I don't agree with the assault...but it's not just $.20...it's the reason the cabbies "claim" to not have change to begin with...because they know people are so apathetic about the "$.20" which eventually adds up to an extra hour's pay per day.

I understand the principle. In this situation principle be damned. My point is there was no need to beat the sh1t outta the cabbie for twenty cents.

Young drunk jocks....I am not at all surprised by this. The "jocks" were the ones who always started fights in the bars when I was young. They seemed to have anger issues, must be all those roids....

another update

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/Lawyer-says-Blackhawks-star-Patrick-Kane_s-charges-overblown.html

"
His lawyer said it is customary for some Buffalo cab drivers to lock the doors of their vehicles with the passengers inside - if they think they might be stiffed on their fare."

If I were being illegally detained I would assault whoever was detaining me too.

I think the key here is "His lawyer said"...

I am still trying to figure out who's lawyer said that. It has two seperate meanings based on who's lawyer. Its a very badly written article that kinda jumps all over the place. But I was taking it as the cabbie's lawyer saying it.

Why does the cabbie need a lawyer, he's the victim. That been said (I stole that line from Gary Doer), he will need a lawyer to sue Kane, the cab company, the Black Hawks, the entire NHL and Bobby Hull, as well as to broker his book and movie rights, but all that comes later.

How is the cabbie the victim?

He tried to steal from two guys
He held the guys captive when they refused to be stolen from.

For a moment lets replace the two guys with a young 14 year old kid. Think of that scenario now.

If we say it was just 20 cents... well it was just 1 dollar, no it was just 100 dollars... where do we draw the line at where it is okay for the cabbie to hold people hostage and steal from them, and where it is not okay?

A cabbie tried this crap on me one time... sorry I have no change.. and all I had was some 50s and 20s. and pocketful of change ( change that was going to be used for my lunch )

We pull up to the place. the fare is 31.20. I hand him 2 20s and he says.. I have no change. I was like.. what? are you kidding me? he said.. no, I have no change. I said come on you have to have some, he said, no my shift just started I have no change. I said well. I hope you like nickels and dims and proceeded to count out 11.20 worth of nickels and dimes. No freakin tip for that bastard. Unfortunately no lunch for me that day either. It was quite a long drive back to with no fare so he basically screwed himself real good. Then I called the dispatch back later in the day when I finally got home and they actually admitted that they have had complaints about him before but there was not much they could do about it.

nice

So, if Kane were a victim of strong arm robbery and kidnapping over 20 cents, why didn't he call the police? Is the reaction to beat the crap out of someone for 20 cents justified?

Deank... WTF?

First, it WAS twenty cents. You can spin the dollar value from now until the end of time. It was twenty cents.

Second, it was a wealthy professional hockey player. Not a 14 year old kid.

Thirdly, the cabbie is a victim because the wealthy professional hockey player and his brother (?) beat him up. For twenty cents.

Lastly, if Kane felt "threatened" he could have called the police to register a complaint over this kidnapper and have him charged with robbery.

Puulleeeese!

No they beat him up for false imprisonment.
How is he going to call the police? You know for a fact he has a cell phone?
