The local media is pretty useless at asking difficult questions or digging further into stories. I know a lot of people don't like the CBC but as bad as they are, they are the only ones who seem to remember that reporters once asked politicians about policies. Not that they are doing a good job these days either, but compared to the private 'entertainment' news outlets they are still miles ahead. And that's pretty sad.

Media started changing back in the eighties.....there is lots I could say about hard hitting stories that got quashed or discouraged....many of us went independent, shifted our focus to alt media well before the net took hold.....it was hard work for less money and no security but our integrity remained intact. It is sad for me to think back to certain earlier times in my career that were exciting and happy but adaptation is key.....there will always be a receptive audience for solid, unbiased information.....there is a shift in the zeitgeist and the public is speaking up.....I have to be an optimist because too many years I have wasted on being a cynical pessimist.

Cool. Can you tell us about one?
I think the media has become too focused on "fluff," to say the least.

Think of the myriad of conflicts happening around the world, think of the corruption, locally, think of the dirty little Peyton Place like goings on in remote communities that the regional press had no balls to follow-up on because of possible repercussions from advertisers.......I could fill pages, hell make a dissertation, from not only a journo perspective but the perspective of a woman who witnessed a great deal throughout her travels and life back here in Canada.

The media is looking for sensationalistic stuff. And if the story is not sensational enough they use ignorant and moronic headlines such as: "We're still Killerpeg"...

Then the television stations broadcast their 30 second and 60 second soundbites. No more in-depth local features.

I hate to say it (oh I really do) but it seems only brodbeck is willing to ruffle a few feathers. But as is typical a single column in that trashy-tabloid will have to suffice for hard news...

Why not write a book? There would be an audience for it. I'd buy it.

30 second soundbites??? Hahahahahaha.....try about ten. That is why I always get a kick out of any Paul Verhoeven film like RoboCop or Starship Troopers - his parodies of the news and television in general are chillingly spot-on....he was way ahead of his time in terms of trashing mainstream culture even though his films are so action-formulaic....hey, if it works and makes money right?

How do you think I occupy my time? And no, no grants provided here....but donations of libations and invitations to dine are always accepted, eh Rosen?

Are you cooking? My barbeque on Aug 9th, Sunday, my wife has said she is disappearing, so I will have to handle the food. I don't expect too many over, but we will barbeque some steak, and have some coleslaw, some alcoholic beverages, pepsi , 7-up.
Any other suggestions? Do you want hot dogs, hamburgers, or would you prefer steak?

That is great, because my man thinking is steak, cole salw, potatoe chips, which when I think about it really shouldn't be served with filet mignon, but deanK has told me he expects a Northend-type meal. maybe we can upgrade it to potatoe salad?
Let me know your thoughts?
I don't know how many are going to make it over, but I hope that every one will be there with their family, wife and girlfriend, so we can have a really good Northend, Ukrainian style punch -up. I will try and get my Ukrainian Brother-in laws over, and my 88 year old Uncle to bringhis fiddle for entertainment, unless we can get JTF and MizP both cooking on the barbeque, together!
lol

Screw north end food.....do much better quality and for better price, food that is not so bloody pedestrian. I do not require any cooking assistance excepting someone ensuring that my glass is never empty.... Smile El Cheffo has spoken. It would be good to know a few days in advance how many are coming....we can post a menu and ask for suggestions, picks and pans.......I am open....yes, we can have some north end fare but if we can plan something a bit different I do not mind doing the work.

DeanK's idea of north end food is a kolbasa ring and a six pack. Which by the way, is a really decent lunch.
