Not only did we see it coming we PREDICTED it on this very forum. The authorities need to investigate very carefully.

So, the solution that our mighty government has come up with, is to introduce building codes for new hog barns.

Wow, that suddenly makes everything all better!

"Currently there is no provincial legislation that requires farm construction to meet any building codes" - That's good to know!

"Wishart wants to dispel the myth that producers might be burning down their own barns because of hard economic times" - That's going to be a tough one pal...I think the jig is up already! Maybe a few years ago you could have done something pro-active about that rumor, but now, buddy, do you even read the news?

"The new rules would not affect hundreds of aging farm buildings across
the province but would apply to all new construction. They could be
ready by the fall, said Jones" - Oh that's good...especially with a halt to new hog barn construction....so we'll just let the others burn down as the price of hogs continues to decline. Even if the farmer is taking a hit after the insurance claim, I bet he's still making out better than if he still had his herd alive!

Is Monsanto and other hog breeders embedding auto-self-spontaneous-combustion traits into the new hogs or something?

Deank's right....I've not heard of any cattle barns burning down, same goes for poultry barns...and those barns (if you've ever been in one) have a ton of dust and feathers...so if any of those three (cattle, hogs and poultry) were more prone to fires, I would have to think it would be the poultry!

No...it's the opposite actually.

It's not the dry/dusty barns that are a problem. It's the ones that hold moisture in...because that gets in the wiring and electrical systems and makes them erode faster.

Add to that the CS2 contents within the barns...and you basically have a bomb waiting to go off.

I'm not agreeing that there's not some sort of tampering going on by these farmers to try and save money...but I do understand how the barns are so susceptible to fire.

Cow & Poultry barns are typically less humid...and get fewer "washouts" than pig barns do. Cow barns are usually larger (taller) providing more air movement and upper air escape. Poultry barns have less manure...so less gasses to ignite.

Are there statistics involving these hog barn fires which would let us know if there are more male pigs in the barns v females? I have been told for years that females do not emit as much methane as males, so it could be a gender bias issue. I have no biology background, I'm just basing that on what my wife tells me.

And ventilation?

Nah, what you are seeing is Ferengi lightening folks. Many of the barns that have burned down are/were state-of-the-art construction. Especially the Hutterite built and managed barns.

The upswing in fires is directly related to the market forces... That is why we were able to predict more such fires.
