Not according to my friends from Elliot Lake, ON. They quite enjoyed the zoo as well as the Children's Museum. I am not a huge fan of zoo's, I don't enjoy seeing animals caged. I guess if you enjoy that sort of thing then yes our zoo is shabby. If I didn't enjoy meat so much I would become a vegetarian. Wink

I was there a few years ago, and it looked worse than I had ever seen it. The cages were rusting, as were the fences (which also looked very delapitated), the glass and plastic on displays were old and worn with cracks and area where you couldn't even see through them. The place just looks worn and dated. Don't feel alone though; Edmonton's zoo is also a dump (and an embarrassment). The two are so close in their crappiness that I can't decide which one is worse. I don't know of any plans to fix up Edmonton's zoo, but I hope that Winnipeg beats them to the punch.
As I said, I feel the Assiniboine Zoo has so much potential; if only those who run the park would allow it to grow and prosper.

That would be the city proper. Their track record is abysmal.

Yes sad to say right from Thompson on the city has chosen to ignore it , but Katz is going in the right way in getting private funds involved to some degree. It will lead to the money being there and the efficiency going way up running it .

I think that putting the money that the City normally spends on the zoo, into the hands of "The Conservancey", to run all aspects, is a great idea!
The Conservancy is trying to raise over 10 years $180 million dollars for this expansion.
I believe that the City normally spends 4-6 million.
The expansion of the duck pond is very smart as that is free to Winnipeger's and every one likes free.
I haven't been to the zoo since forever. I don't want to see birds , or animals, in cages!
I find it upsetting that our facility for the big white bears doesn't meet minimum standards, and now the City will take only rescue cubs. What cost is there for a "proper" bear enclosure?
There was a front page article this morning in the Free press talking about Polar bears being extinct in 30 years!
I don't know why they publish that drivel! The whole thought of Polar Bears being extinct in 30 years is absolutely nonsense. The polar bear population has been expanding in the last 10 years, if you listen to the hunting group who has been counting!
