How about I focus on both, continue to speak my mind and you still guarantee me that I'll never have to hear from you again? That would be awsome! Razz
As usual, you didn't understand what I was trying to say.......

Things in Wpg were way better back in 1952! You could feed the co-op milk horse carrots from your hand, while the milk man was delivering milk into our apartment block. Same when the ice-man was delivering ice!
Ever since then things have gotten worse!

Many people don't want to listen to those that have moved away because in their minds, moving away = not caring about the city, which simply isn't true, at least for myself.
No, most people get pissed at Sputnik because he constantly discusses how much better things are in Calgary. That simply does not help.

My response is there are likely hundreds of places around the world "better" than Calgary. So what? Ditto Edmonton. Or any other city raised to suggest Winnipeg is inferior.

Personally I tire of hearing that crap. Winnipeg has warts. Winnipeg used to be a much greater city. She may well again be. But Winnipeg is what she is. I'm happy doing what little I do from the inside.

I respect the opinions of others not living here. But please try to understand how constant criticism from people that do nothing to improve the very city they are critical of can grate mightily on one's nerves.

Eye Eye Captain! pirat
I gotta go read what Albertans rant about in t'hair forum(s).
Winnipeg is constantly growing, just that there's a serious wart growing a bit to the north from city hall...
Leaving out that problem, Winnipeg would definitely climb the Best Cities To Live In standings.

I think that there are more wimps than real men, and that is why Winnipeg hasn't grown as fast as other cities. -40 to plus 40 and then 6 weeks into spring- mosquitoes to force one inside.
700,000 isn't bad for a small city --it is incredible what a steady workplace, and reasonable house prices produce.
Although +75% in the housing market in the last 5 years is damn good!

I disagree...BRT is moving backwards...and creating a new problem for a growing city.

Nobody is going to move here for a bus line...especially one that is going to be slower than what was already in place.

ok well, I grew up in Winnipeg and worked in this city until about 2002-2003 which was when I started to explore out west. I moved to Victoria and Saltspring Island for about 8 months total and then came back to Winnipeg for a year, then went back west to Hornby Island then tofino for roughly 2.5 years. And currently, since April, been living back in Winnipeg. I feel I can make some comparisons, and have before, back when NW was the old old old forum, and still people made the same "dont diss winnipeg" and "like it or leave" type comments back then.

Winnipeg does have some pluses, though it also has some negatives, some can be changed, some not.

Climate
Livabillity
Jobs
Salary
Education
Natural Surroundings
Social/Nightlife
Sporting Events

Now i can say which city, vancouver/winnipeg or edmonton/winnipeg wins over each of the catagories, but it becomes the individual who rates each city, and also each area of importantance to themselves.

Some people dont care that they make half of what they could other places, the argue, "yeah, but my house is half as much" and others dont care that its cold here stating "yeah, but atleast i can bring my kid sledding 6 months a year." And those same people tend not to listen to the responses like "yes, your house is half as much, but imagine buying and paying your house in bc off, and being able to sell it, move nearly anywhere and buy the house in the new location for cash and still have a tidy sum left over?" and "yes you can sled 6 months a year, but wouldn't it be nice to surf and snoboard in the same day? not wonder how long the car needs to be 'warmed up' before starting your day?"

Its different strokes for different folks, no one can change another.

So naturally, the ones who want the nightlife, the mountains, ocean and the cash gravitate to Vancouver and Montreal, and the ones that are ok with lower standards, homebodied and whatnot tend to stay. I can hear the 'but the city is more liveable' comments which are yet to come, but to some, other places are 'more livable' via the things the other city offers.

With that said, my preference is

Climate - Vancouver Island
Livabillity - Vancouver Island
Jobs - Vancouver Island
Salary - Vancouver Island
Education - Winnipeg
Natural Surroundings -Vancouver Island
Social/Nightlife - Day/Weekend ferry trips to Vancouver
Sporting Events - Vancouver, though I'll always cheer for the bombers no matter what, like i said i grew up here.

Now you can say im completely out to lunch, but it boils down to the individual, its just sad that many of the go getters that grow up in this city go getter somewhere else.

We're here for two years, while the g/f is in school, and then we're out, back to the island.

cc

Actually I have zero problem with you or anyone stating their preferences. Makes perfect sense to me. Frankly if I could transfer Vancouver's climate and scenery to Winnipeg I would. But then we'd probably have 5 million peeps living here.

That said I do take exception to the notion that peeps living here have lower standards. Their standards are different, not necessarily lower.

And were one were to constantly bring up comparisons of Vancouver - Winnipeg ad naseum then I'd get a little ticked. Endless comparisons don't bring much to the conversation.

There's just one MAJOR comparison I must mention here:
In Canada, teachers teach kids TRAFFIC SAFETY throughout elementary school.
In Italy, they don't know nothing about TRAFFIC SAFETY in ANY school...
The result? Many, many children get killed on the Italian streets.
Long live the children growing up in Canada, at least they have an educational head start.

Who wouldn't prefer B.C? Probably those who love skating? Toboganning? Cros country skiing?
In Vancouver you have downhill skiing and scuba diving that you can do so close to each other.
I spoke to my cousin in Vancouver and she was complaining about the mosquitoes.
Casual Chris- how big is Saltspring island? Did you run into a Sid Filkow?
