What is a "regular" type of school?

Why is there a "regular" type of school?

Schools used to be 1-room buildings with 1 teacher for all 12 grades, all the kids sitting together, older students helping the younger ones.

In some areas...it's STILL like that.

Does that make the school less effective? or the teacher less skilled?

In some areas sure, in others it excels. Teaches the students not only their curriculum, but also responsibility, how to teach others, how to interact & work with others. It gives the younger students roll models in the older ones, and makes each of them responsible for learning...not just listening.

I agree the schools should be comfortable, and free from mould, bug infestations, etc. That air conditioning & heat should be provided where reasonable. And that the provisions for teaching (text books, desks/tables, instructional aides) should all be provided.

This "health standard" crap is getting out of hand though. We do lots of work on schools. We're doing one right now in Gimli. We had to pour tar on the roof to seal it one day...and the odour permeated into the school. Apparently some teachers & students got "sick" from the odour and wanted to go home.

Suddenly it's a crisis though...I get called up to address the situation, of which there isn't really one. ODOUR will not cause any real damage. Sure it can give you a headache...but it's not going to cause any damage. It's not fumes getting in...it's a smell...similar to that of perfume...or the after effects of some good chili.

Whether it was some teachers who just wanted the day off, or some kids hoping to go home "sick"...it was non-threatening...but had one of the health inspectors been up there...they probably would've tried condemning the school.

My high school was 1/2 a mile from a pig farm...now THAT should've been condemned (the pig farm, not the school). Every few days as the wind switched directions...we'd know it...in every room of the building!!!

Hey, some schools in Winnipeg don't have air conditioning...

As for odours, I get a headache when exposed to diesel for any length of time. It gives me a headache. I can relate to those that might experience the same from tar.

Tar smells like money to me, but I used to be in the roofing business.

If they were exposed to tar (ie. the actual fumes) then there would be an issue.
These are not the fumes, this is the odour...there is a distinct difference.

There's a dissipation rate for all products (each one is different), and that's affected by wind/weather/barometric pressure...basically a bunch of math.

But the fumes are generally gone almost immediately...the odour will linger longer though...sometimes for several minutes.

Mmmmm....on a clear day I can still smell it....especially when I'm around a bank. Funny that.
