Hey there.
I'm working on an old computer and need to update audio drivers.
I don't know how to find out what type of audio card is in the machine...but when I turn it on...I get messages from Windows that it has found two items (hardware).
RAID Controller
Multimedia Audio Controller
When I say "find a new driver online" it comes back with "cannot be found".
I know there are utilities to "find" missing drivers...but I don't want to spend money on something that SHOULD be free anyway.
Does anyone have a utility that might work? or some advice on how to find the missing drivers?
Thanks.

Ages, if you could let me know what's written on the cards (model numbers, serial numbers, etc. Pictures would be best.) or stamped on some of the chips on the cards, I may have something in the archives that'll help.

What OS is on the system?

Nope, finances are a shambles right now. Will be complete sometime in September.

Ok...sorry about the delay.

What numbers off the board am I looking for.
I only found one set of numbers on the mother board (have to go home and look them up again).

WinXP Home Edition is the OS

some kind of "Lite" Bios.

I know that probably doesn't help...I'll try to get more info at home tonight.

Would probably need the numbers right off the chips on the sound card...if it's not embedded in the mobo, take it out and snap a pic to post. Otherwise, you'll probably have to track down the mobo manufacturer to find the model #, which you could use on the manufacturer's website...which may or may not have drives for the supported audio dvice.

But that doesn't even make sense.
WinXP recognizes the hardware exists...it just can't find the drivers for it.

I downloaded a program off the net that searches your computer and figures out what drivers are missing, then will go get those drivers and install them. The search is free...the retrieval costs $30.

This tells me it's looking for something and then comparing it against a database to see what's current. So I'm presuming someone out there has a version of this which is free...since almost everything you want software wise can be found free somewhere if you look in the right place.

While it's been ages since I worked on actual PC hardware (I'm fond of Sun hardware), I did find this link invaluable when it came to finding drivers for hardware embedded on the motherboard.

Ok...here's the stuff of the motherboard...if that will help.

KT3 Ultra CE
MS638OE Ver 1.0

Don't know if any of that will matter.
Where the speakers/mic plug in, is attached to the motherboard...no numbers visible.

Again, I think this is a software issue. They were working fine, then I switched the harddrive out for a new one, and now it's not working anymore. Tells me the drivers are just missing.

Any help is appreciated though...so thanks again for yours.

Does this look anything like your mobo?

http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=273#

If so...try the audio driver download....I think the AC/97 audio drivers should work even if the mobo is slightly different...they used the same AC/97 hardware is most of those boards.

Yes...it worked...got the audio & RAID drivers both to install and seems to be working (though had to do some research for the RAID...wasn't clear how to do the install).

New problem now though...I have a DVD Burner installed. The computer sees the drive, but no matter what disc I put in, it won't read the disc.

Have to figure that one out...and then the system will be working wonderfully.

No...i set it to region 1...but it won't play ANY disc, cd/dvd

so no audio discs, no game/installation discs, no dvds

it's as though it's not reading it. the power is coming on and the disc spins, but if you go to the drive list and try clicking, it says 'please insert disc'

And even if the cables are properly seated, they could be old, or mayhaps have been damaged/stretched. May have to try replacing the cable all together....spare ribbon cables are everywhere now-a-days....and if that doesn't work, could try putting the DVD drive in a different system to see if it works there. If it doesn't, then you need a new one...and those are relatively cheap as well....

Glad you were able to get the sound drivers to work at least! Wink

The rails inside the DVDROM drive (the ones that hold the laser/lens assembly) might need to be lubricated. This has happened to me on a number of old CDROM and DVDROM drives (especially the cheap ones) , as well as several CD-based game consoles...

This drive is (reasonably) new. (about 4 years)

It was working fine only a month ago when UBUNTU was in the system...but now it's not working.
It tells me it's most likely a software thing (ie. drivers)
I'm trying to find the installation disc that came with it (it's in my spindle somewhere), and will try that first.

All the cables/connections are fine..they weren't touched (by me) during the installation of the new hard drive.

don't know if it's a cleaning issue.
I suppose it could need it...my 3-year-old daughter has been using it after all Wink
