Don't follow.

What happens when Deank's kid flushes the cell phone down the toilet, and it starts flooding? How do you call the plumber? Wink

Nah, just kidding, I'm sure Deank can unclog a toilet...

As far as I recall, it's just GOM & his cats...so unless Fluffy & Fifi are making 976-PUSS calls...it probably doesn't matter if there's no phone in the house when he's not home.

My wife & I went 2 years in our house before we got a landline. After we had our daughter though, we got one which provides a "security", and for our babysitter to use when we're not in the house.

Add to that my being an American...so calling my family south of the border is actually free with the plan we have for our phone. The cheapest cell phone plan to call the US costs double what our landline plan costs.

I'm in Iceland, but I only know a handful of people who still use their land lines. Most people have one just to use an ADSL connection but I never call my friends' home lines. In fact, most of them probably don't even have a phone plugged into it.

Also, calling from cellular to cellular is cheaper than calling from cellular to landline or landline to cellular, so it doesn't even pay off to have a landline in this country, since so few people have one anyway. Even so, people go out a lot and it's not really worth the effort to call the landline first and then the cell. But Icelanders need everything to happen as quickly as possible. Wink Time isn't money in Iceland, it's the very essence of life itself.

yeah but given the size of iceland what is it.. 2 maybe 3 towers and the whole country is covered?

Hmmm, I don't know, actually. Wink Iceland is only habitable along the coastlines, nobody lives in central Iceland so we don't even have to cover the entire country. But there's connection everywhere you might possibly want to live. If you're going into the wilderness, bring an NMT, but there's fine GSM signal in any place it's habitable to begin with.

yeah in Manitoba.. not so much.. regardless of what MTS says.

It's been a week. So far so good. There were a couple quirks at the beginning such as Bluetooth not auto syncing and no call display. Fixed the first and I think I can fix the second.

Quality is exactly like using a cell phone (duh!). I will keep testing it, probably for another 3 weeks. If satisfied I will disconnect my land line.

I'm having mixed feelings about bluetooth.
My headset for my cell phone keeps dropping. I don't know if it's the phone or the headset (quite probably it's the Windows Mobile on my phone)...but very annoying as when I dial a call, it starts ringing, and then drops the signal...so I have to go scrambling for my cell phone anyway Sad.

I have had no problems with bluetooth in my car, and after the one bt glitch with my home system, no problems.

When mating a device the first time it looks to sync you might get a message on your phone display asking for permission. Maybe click the box that allows it to sync automatically???

Yeah...it does sync...but for some reason it will just drop a call, or drop the sync. Usually when it's transitioning from voice activation to actually connecting the call.
Or when I try to answer it...I'll push the earset button, and then it will drop and leave people talking into my cell phone speaker.

As of 2007, Iceland had:
186,700 phone lines, and
347,500 cell phones.

Population:
306,694 (2009 est.)

Seems quite a few Icelanders have more than one cell phone!

No data on number of cell towers.

Yeah, even anti-civilization, anti-technology hippies have cellular phones here. If you don't have a cell phone, there's reason to suspect you of keeping shrunken heads in your basement.

I have both a land line and a cell. I rarely use my cell, only about 4 people have the number. I use it for emergency purposes only. I have no need to text or talk on the phone while out running errands.

I have disconnected my land line. I'm satisfied with the quality. Works great.

My land line is here to stay, wouldn't have much use for a cell phone. To each his/her own, whatever works for you Very Happy

Landline has been gone for years...don't see a need for one with wireless plans being roughly the same cost but with much added flexibility. Even if I did a lot of long distance calling to family members I can add up to 5 of them for $5/month nation wide unlimited. Don't see the point to a land line at all unless your the type of person who spends hours a day on the phone.
