It is not about making it "special". It is what it is. The people most directly affected by it believe it is necessary. If someone else has been affected by something just as heinous and want to take a week to remember it who are we to question it?

If you want to create an "atrocity" remembrance week go for it. Too bad we don't have a museum for these kind of things...

Well during world war 2, 30 million non jew civilians were killed. We never hear anything about them.

Anyone see the similiarity between this and roadside memorials?

If anyone ever thinks we will be allowed to forget the Jewish holocaust, they're nuts. We'll have 25 million reasons a year to remember.

Peeps, we need to stay focused. This is not about Somalians or Russian citizens or Gypsies. It is about the Holocaust.

Start another thread about everything else not Holocaust related...

The Holocaust is by many magnitudes, the most remembered, commemerated, studied, discussed, analyzed, debated, filmed, written about even of its kind in the history of mankind.
If the Winnipeg Jewish Federation wants to have Holocaust Week, I say more power to them.
I just can't imagine that such a community would devote only a week to such remembrance. That would be like Christians having "God" week to remember God. Christians should be remembering God every day. The Jewish community should be remembering the Holocaust every day. I bet most of them do.

I think you are splitting hairs. Is it possible to have remembrance and not awareness or vice versa?

Not a hair split to me. Two completely different acts.
EVERYONE is aware of the holocaust.. even those who deny it.
Remembrance is the actual act of remembering the people, the event, the emotions involved.

I didn't think that the holocaust referred only to the "Jewish" part. There were other groups that were killed . WW2 had Russians, Poles, Romani, Jehova Witnesses, Freemasons, as well as Gypsies, that were targeted. Wikepedia says 11-17 million in appx total.

about 24,500,000 hits for holocaust ( which actually seems very low to me )

about 930 hits for holdomor

So to say the people are not AWARE of the holocaust is an arguement that to me just does not hold water. Do we need to remember it and the terrible lessons learned? Perhaps, but we sure as heck dont as a entity need to be more aware of it. Its just not possible.

traditionally the holocaust spelled with a capital letter did indeed refer to just the Jewish people murdered. Increasingly people are trying to argue that it should apply to all.

I attribute the Holocaust to that singular WWII Nazi event. Thus when the thread talks about a Holocaust that is the one event I am thinking about.

Awareness means fcuk all if you don't do anything about it.
