First nations can only apparently build 480 for a cost of about 156000 per house.

HOLY FRAK!!!...

Why do their houses cost so damn much? Remembering of course that they own the land, they pay no tax on any goods purchased on or shipped to reserve land and that they have a huge job shortage so building them should be rather low in labour costs.

Northern labour is a fortune plus the standard 50% rebate to the chief for his supervisor fees!

Then of course, each house has to be built at least twice. The first time and then again when it is burned to the ground.

This is what concerns most people when money and Aboriginals is discussed. Where does it go?

The simple solution here is create a simple all Aboriginal home construction consortium up north somewhere. Build modular houses with an all Aboriginal staff. Truck the finished product to its' final destination and voila. Economies of scale.

Throw in transparency and accountability (and monthly audits) and maybe all the money goes where it should.

Enough already.

I guessed that an average cost of a well built, "well built " "well built" home for the northern area would cost appx $250,000.
I am guessing at labour costs at least 2 1/2 times that of in Winnipeg.
They would be better to hire ONLY aboriginals to learn a trade on the job. This way the locals would learn a trade, that is in demand, build their homes for their families, earn a good wage, and then be able to move to any city and be employed.
Wow what a chance to do good!
Any bets?

I can do it for less, plus I'll throw in a little cultural experience for free.

1200 Square foot premade homes can be purchased for $102000.00 delivered and set up. some of them come with freaking whirpools and because they were the model home can be purchased for a mere 65K.

i had this discussion yesterday.....here you have two towns up north, Lynn Lake and lead RApids....both towns with infrastructure in place that is being under utilized or not at all.....why is the Mathias Colomb band or was it Black Sturgeon....cannot remember.....building a whole new effin rez between the two towns?

Phucking ridiculous in my not so humble opinion....more money down the toilet and headaches later....

JTF - I would like one of those for my back yard.
My back yard, I just chipped the ice from the door of my gazeebo on Tuseday, and was able to break in, and turn on the TV. It isn't safe yet as there was 1" of ice on the floor, which will be gone by tomorrow.
Time to move my cigars outdoors!
FINALLY!!

If it's sunny Sunday would be great! Do you smoke cigars? If not you get double the Crown Royal, because I am not supposed to be drinking because of some new pill that may get me flying! yuk, yuk!
maybe I will have some work set up in the back yard, like installing a fence?

This fence thing really is not a fence, more like something for the ferns to grab onto, and I have just figured aout a list of cedar, so if anyone has some cedar pieces , please e-mail them to me.
74 pieces 1"x2"x6'
63 pieces 1"x 2"x 8'
20 pieces 2"x4"x 8'
10 peices 4"x4"x 6'
2 peices 4x4x 8'
one 6' cedar gate with harware
40 metal brackets to attach 2x4's to posts
350 ceramic coated screws maybe 1 3/4"- not sure on that

With the shortage of good labour, all types of building has gotten very expensive, unless you can do-it-yourself, or get a few drunk friends to give a hand!

so its a 80 foot long fence you are building? that does not seem to be very long for the area you live in.. is it only a partial fence?

rosencrentz

63 feet in 1 area, and 21 feet in a 2nd area. There are existing fences, and existing bushes that do not need anything, and 1 other area 28' that isn't on the plan as yet!
We have to get rid of the useless part where we have layers and layers of our Northend heritage with different metal fencing that the dogs jump up on and then hop over the neighbours fence.
lol!
Pretty embarassing collection of fencing that cost a lot , but was too short so we doubled up and it didn't work, but got uglier!

I'm e-mailing all of the cedar you've asked for...and then some.

Ok...Private Messaged it to you.

How about trading it for a nice couch? Very Happy
