Isn't violent crime miles higher than Canada? I mean the murder rate in many US cities is in the high hundreds and thousands annually no?

That may be...and it needs to be determined on "per-capita", as the stressors and triggers which affect those who commit violent crimes, are going to differ/increase/decrease with various populations and climates.

new gun restrictions definitely not a good thing, but the ones we have are just fine, if they were enforced and actually punished.

There is nothing wrong with owning many guns! they feel really good when you hold them! I feel so powerful! let someone try and break in!! 
Put bad people in jail for a long time, and the streets become safer!
Ban the manufacturing of bullets, so we can continue to export sales to areas that really need more guns!
Those countries that are run by dictators and communist countries that started with a revolution, seen to need a very large amount of weapons so the beloved leader can maintain her control !
