Problem is height and weight are such a small part of the screening proccess , they want to know more who you are then what you can beat up.

It's not a matter of beating someone up. It is more a matter of how capable one is at one's job and pulling your own weight.

I am constantly amazed to see a petite female fireman. There is no way in the world she can do the job as effectively as a man. Even a man of the same stature. That means someone else will always be picking up the slack.

This is the same in the police force. How many times do police have to go hands on on a drunk perp? Please do not tell me an average sized woman will be as effective as an average sized man. It is simply physically not possible.

i absolutely agree with you grumpy

i think there is no problem hiring women or people of any size as long as they are all meeting the same physical requirements before being hired. i could be wrong, but i beleive that women have a lower requirement to meet than men do, or if its the same, then the requirement was lowered so that women could meet it, either way, its not right.

It should be based solely on meeting a physical requirement relevant to the duty, not whether the applicant has a penis!

Depends on the training as I have seen some women you don;t want tangle with , besides they are never alone in the car . An officer will cover each others back they have to Man Or Women . Your point is taken though as it probaly doe,s and will happen.

Besides women can talk down a situation that a man can't . Have seen it happen many times when children are involved .

Absolutely it should be. How do you jump to the conclusion I am a sexist from my comment?

Here.

Physically not possible? That's a pretty absolute statement.

There was a time when the rules WERE different for a man and a woman. They were not rules for a 5' person and a 6' person.

And to lower the rules to allow a less capable person to become eligible is absurd.

Am I wrong? And drop the curt crap. Tell me I'm wrong. Can a 5' firefighter do the same job as a 6' firefighter?

having been stabbed, having been cut with a chain saw ( okay that one is my own fault), having been punched.. slapped, kicked, elbowed, thrown agaisnt a wall, through a door, into a door and hit with bats and batons of one sort or another I can tell you with some certainity that getting hit hard with a thin batton hurts alot more then most other things (even the bat) and if nothing else at least makes you drop what you are holding quite quickly
DeanK, surely there is an association that can help you repair your marriage??

Firefighting is not the same as a cop , it is a different type of physical job.

Hell for that matter can an average 5'6" female lift the same weight as a 5'6" MALE? Physiologically they are different. That is not sexism my friend.

Same rules though Pav. If you were partnered with an officer that could not physically pull you out of the line of fire would you feel comfortable... What if you got involved in a fist fight with a couple drunks in a bar?

Dispatch always make certain that the right people are at bar fights , and yes I think any women can pull you or I out of trouble if shown how to do it . Grumpy they have to do it in training to show they can .

An average 5'6" female can train to be able to lift the same as an average 5'6" Male... and if she can qualify to a standard in place for becoming a police officer or fire fighter, all the power to her! There is no need to make absolutes about the difference between the sexes, when the qualifications must be made on an individual basis.

And dispatch doesn't have an option of who to send.

They send who's on duty or on call at that moment. If that officer doesn't feel they can handle it...they are supposed to call for backup before approaching the situation.
