the verbal promises would be handed down from generation to generation in the traditional way.

Does that work like that children's game where little kids pass a quote from one child to the next ending up with something not very much like it began?

Did it go something like this:
* we promise to take care of you for a decade
* we promise to take care of you for two decades
* we promise to take care of you for two decades as long as the sun shines
* we promise to take care of you for one hundred years and give all your people a PHD
* we promise to take care of you for one hundred years and give all your people a PHD and free housing in perpetuity

I sometimes wonder how good the translation was to the natives of these documents and did they really understand what they signed .

As Nelson claims, this was all "their" land before the white man came. Did someone forget to tell them about the flooding? Just wondering.
