that would be one place where all development should be eliminated.

That place is destined to become an island and an oxbow lake!

nope... becase we will control it and force it to be a river until the ends of human existance... even though it totally should happen,

We'll lose that fight eventually...

nah we will just keep dumping dollars after dollars into saving those homes....but them out.. tell them to move.. or suffer.

They should just cut a line through where that "A" marker is...and "straighten" the river. Fill in the rest of the bow and put homes in there.

I'm surprised that didn't happen "naturally" in 1997 Wink.

it probably would happen if they did not keep stabilizing the river bank there.

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/City-properties-undergoing-flood-protection-rises-to-175-42278157.html

Another 35 properties ordered to build sandbag dikes.
A lot of focus is on the risk of ice jams - is this year particularly bad for ice jams? Has the ice broken up better in previous years?

The lake is still frozen so the ice has no where to go when it hits Lake Winnipeg. It is also still fairly thick in places.

Interesting story on the CBC website by Wab Kinew. His is a sad tale about the sorry state of First Nations people in the flood. Mostly his is a story of how the white man is responsible for it...

So long as the flood rivers flow

I guess what never gets tired is this "First Nations people too often get left up the creek without a paddle" mentality.

While just about everybody else in Southern Manitoba has been a) building defenses to the potential of flooding over the last twelve years and 2) sandbagging like mad to protect exposed areas the last six weeks, what have the Roseau River First Nation been doing?

Hundreds were evacuated to Winnipeg hotels. Some were jiu-jitsuing and grappling in Winnipeg and still others had been away in Toronto, Minnesota and Florida.

Sorry Wab Kinew, I don't buy your woe is me bafflegab. Time to start looking inward instead of pointing fingers everywhere else.

"And they are not helpless victims waiting around for the government to save them."

.....
"Prime Minister Stephen Harper visited Winnipeg recently and pledged to help "in any way that is needed." However, the branch of the federal government that would be in charge of helping First Nations, the department of Indian and northern affairs, has so far been noncommittal",

They've got a million dollars to piss away as a donation, so fcuk 'em I say. They should learn to tread water.

There was another story where the assistant to Chuck Strahl claimed that flood prone Manitoba reserves receive money annually just for the purpose of flood management. I wonder how Terry Nelson spent those monies in the last few years?

its really not that hard to build a dike... in fact if they did it properly they would make it as part of a ( insert name of earth moving device here ) job training program and several of their residents could have benefitted and be employed in that job position now.

Employment? Is that a priority?

Doesn't it also refer to "as long as the sun shines"? Wouldn't the treaty have expired that first night? Wink

There should have been 'where the sun don't shine' a few times imho.

Heh heh

Funnier still is the notion that these peeps were relocated to very poor land. Are the surrounding farms also on very poor land? Are the surrounding towns under water? Is unemployment in the surrounding area 40%.

Yup. I don't get it.

the thing is.. no treaties actually refer to that (that i can find)... it was just one guy explaining it to the Natives before they signed.

verbal contract?

Deank

Deank

hrmmm.. that might be it...they could be using the verbal portion of what was promised them and since the natives at the time may well have not been able to read or fully understand the contract, verbal would be what the signors could be held to..

thanks

Who remembers what was said by whom? Heh heh and does the contract have a clause the precluded verbal promises?
