earlier this year it was predicted that IF precipitation stayed at regular levels we would be seeing the 5th worst flood on record...
Well in our area its been normalish... ND has been hit hard... so much so that
"
Several North Dakota cities and towns, including Fargo, Grand Forks and Pembina, "have a near 100 per cent chance of reaching major flood stage" this spring, according to a report released this morning by the U.S. National Weather Service."
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/Report-warns-North-Dakota-to-prepare-for-flooding-41215922.html

yeah... this is not going to be good... manitoba Flood forecaster will release their update next friday.

ND received 30 cms of snow a few days back. YIKES is all I can say. At least, here in Winnipeg, we are safe.

Is construction on the floodway complete?

Not sure if it's complete but good enough to save Winnipeg from any major flood. At least that is what I am hoping!

If it isn't, what about all those union workers that risk getting swept away in the rapid water? Smile

The floodway is ready for a once in 500 year flood. It will handle a once in 700 year flood when complete.

Does the presence of the floodway not also help towns south of us? With the water diverted does that not release pressure downstream?

No, actually it backs it up and floods them. At least that's how it used to work. Not sure if they fixed that. They restrict the flow into the red river channel, until it gets to the level that is spills over the spillway into the big ditch.

it actually makes flooding worse south of us.

we sacrifice the few for the many.

but for the most part those homes and towns upgraded their ring dikes that year or the following year and will survive most flood scenarios unscathed.

big dikes help solve problems.

I cant wait for that newspaper headline sometime in April

I can tell you for a fact the floodway does nothing for the folks south of Winnipeg, look at Morris , St Jean Baptiste and St Agathe as examples. In 1997 my brother who resides in Gretna MB had the Red River almost at his back door,(2 miles away) and Gretna is 18 miles west of the river, thats how spread out the water was due to the back pressure from the floodway.

What do people expect? We are living on a flood plain. There is a risk of flooding....A friend of mine lives out of town is expecting a flood (he backs onto the Souris River). He accepts the risk and to him living there is worth it. He is now busy trying to build up the bank.

and of course the friends who have farms in the flood plain better not ever complain... unless they dont quite understand why the land in a flood plain is so damn fertile.

A lot depends on how fast it melts and some other factors.
