Goth_chic wrote:The cheapest rates at any hotel is Travel Agent rate which is $69.00 per night for a standard room only. If your wives friends came in to town then in order to get government rates they must work for the government and show ID at check in.

We went down and booked and paid for the rooms, showed them her ID.

69.00 govt rate must've been years ago. I've been in the industry a long time and it's never been lower then 90.00.....but some lower quality hotels/motels do charge less. And the Radisson downtown was considered lower quality at one time. Bad owners.....

Great rooms, window bars, old-fashion cuisine.

Bravo to the city and our paramedics...

From the Sun
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service will send a response vehicle to help evacuate hospital and personal care facilities in Fargo, North Dakota.

The Major Incident Response Vehicle will be sent to Fargo today and is intended for use in potential "mass casualty situations."

The vehicle can carry eight stretcher patients or 10 ambulatory patients per trip.

The unit leaves Fire Station #1 around 11 a.m. today.

You know, it does bear a slight resemblance to the transit buses they retired in the late 80s..

most of the residents going home

which is good news to the restraunts around the Delta as with all the residents staying there, sales were down substanially as they were all given food vouchers for the hotel restraunt.. instead of normal business people and travellers who would be visiting the other restraunts in the area.

Also, there is a call for donations of toys for the children staying in the hotel.

that really does not make any sense... why not just have someone go and get their toys from home?

Sounds like they are used to running around outside and "making up games" instead of playing with toys. Maybe they should have been evacuated to a more rural setting where they could do that, rather than being cooped up in an concrete jungle?

totally makes no sense cooping them up like that. Not saying there are many other options but right in the middle of the city where there is very very little for the kids to do?
Do people pretty much get evacuated every year?
What town is almost 100% flood proof in the South? Winkler Morden perhaps? heck even in Winnipeg

would it maybe not make sense to build an evacuation centre of some sort that could house 1000 people comfortably? ( well more comfortable then a tent) That would have either a number of small kitchens for people to cook for themselves or one large one for mass cooking? maybe have a gym of some sort attached so people can exercise...
Could be used for any type of evac... fire, flood... whatever... or even a temp facility for medical segregation during an outbreak. Far enough away but close enough to?

Usually, USUALLY... Such evacuations are to schools and churches. Some peeps are more special than others. Because Canada did not help the reserve build a better mousetrap (unlike every other jurisdiction in Southern Manitoba), guess who is on the hook for those hotel and related costs?

Hint: It is not the Aboriginal Firefighters Association.

They had 13 years to better protect the reserve, but of course it'll be the governments fault cause we all know the evil government controls mother nature! I do have loads of sympathy for the staff at the hotel, I would quit if I had to work there.

I wonder if some of the people in East Selkirk and St Andrews will get a free hotel stay? Somehow I doubt it!
