After my incident, I take no chances. Before it happened, I just dismissed people like that as harmless. Today, if a schizophrenic approaches me downtown, I put my guard up, and tell him basically to get the hell away from me, in no uncertain terms. It's better than him/her doing a sneak attack and pulling a blade on you...

Yes, and they found a way to quiet the voices that Riel heard. Maybe they should take the hint as to what works when people "hear voices".

It was front page news in the Red Deer Advocate in the first week of March 2006. I was interviewed by the paper. Someone told me it even made the Edmonton news. I've actually forgiven the guy that did it, since I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and there was no permanent damage. I just hope the guy that did it is still in Ponoka (Alberta Mental Hospital) still.

When this beheading occured, I actually called the Free Press about the incident claiming it may not be as rare as you think (being attacked by a mentally ill person). I also was upset at their coverage of the incident in the weeks that followed. They didn't care at all about the victim. All I remember hearing was how Li was a "good guy" who went to church and helped out, and how he was a victim considering he didn't get the help that he needed. Maybe so, but how do yoou think the family of McKay feels after reading that garbage?

Well, he is human; he just doesn't act like it. They can say whatever they want about the guy; just as long as he is never let out in society again since he is a major risk. This is what I truly want.

Li was found NOT CRIMINALLY RESPONSIBLE. He will not goto jail, but will remain in a psychiatric hospital indefinitely.

That is the way our judicial system works. Is it time to reform this area? Should the mentally ill face the same consequences as the standard criminal element?

He will be going to Selkirk. But I don't think we'll see him on the streets any time soon.

I would not count on that give it 5 yrs he will have to go to the dentist or some other cockamany excuse to , get out and well out he will walk away . It has been done .

Sure. They have also escaped from prisons.

Both heard voices. Both killed people. Whats the difference?

I doubt it. This was a worldwide story. There is no way the Province is going to give him the opportunity to escape.

he will be out on day passes before too long i think. There are all kinds of mentally ill people at the hospital in selkirk and there are tons around town that get out for a day or a week.

Remember he is not criminally resopnsible, so if they feel that medications and treatment are working well, they have no reason to keep him locked up and secure like a murderer. He will be out and about just like any other patient.

You may be right. I'm hoping the province and the health authorities are sensitive to the populace and keep him permanently locked up (no day passes) for many years. I think we can agree the dude does not need day passes to treat him successfully.

I am sensitive to the notion that mental health is an issue here. But the dude cut someone's head off. I understand dude was off his med's when he went to work. Who is to say that after a few years of treatment, when dude is deemed safe to release into society as long as he takes his med's, that he'll take his med's? And if he stops taking his med's will he cut off your grandchild's head?

Why take the risk. Keep him in Selkirk where he is a minimal risk to general society. Call that revenge if that make's you feel better. Me? Call it making sure no one else is separated from their head. I can live with that.

I don't think too many people want revenge. I think most people want to make sure Li will be put away in a hospital and supervised for the remainder of his life. Unless, of course, you want him to be released and do this again in 5 years.

As I understand it, statistically, the odds are that he won't do anything wrong again...the recidivism rate is what ? ...zero?

zero when on meds.... nearing 100% when they go off meds.
hell they make a 5 year pill now that you get surgically placed in your arm to prevent pregnancy... why cant they make a 5 year or more pill for other drugs?
