yeah... really? like no kidding? A car that flew over a snowbank and totally flew right into a garage pretty much destroying it.. was going at high rate of speed? wow, never saw that coming.

Tragic, but as the old saying goes, speed kills.

Hope buddy had plates on his Beaumont for insurance coverage. Not that it can ever be replaced.

It's not the speed, it's the sudden stop. The cops can't wait to use the word speed but somehow neglect to tell us if the people in the car were wearing seat belts.

There is no way the car was doing the purported 100kmh by the time it actually hit the garage (at 100k it would have gone out the back wall). Even if it was going that fast, near death injuries are most likely caused by not being belted in.

could very well be true.. I have been in some pretty crazy accidents. all in vehicles with no air bags and I have walked away from them all with not even bruising much
100K per hour... launched off an approach into a 40 foot deep ditch.. land pretty much nose first...roll three times and ended on the passenger side. the hardest part was opening the drivers door to get out and then climbing up the ditch.

I heard that the top of their car was sheared off...that could account for the very serious injuries to both people.

One person now declared dead.

The police and the papers are still yammering on about speed. What I want to know is whether or not the victims were wearing seatbelts. I suspect not. The crash just wasn't that bad if both had been properly restrained.

The car was totaled. And if as JTF said the Honda roof was sheared off it is likely the girls had head injuries meaning seatbelts would have done very little to protect them.

I think the roof was cut off by the fire department to get them out (a standard procedure).

My question remains: why not tell us about their wearing of seat belts (or not)?

I don't know. I do know I don't often hear reports on seat belt use during accidents.

And why not? The police are quick to make the "speed was a factor" statement which is a complete waste of time. Speed is always a factor. It's not often a cause, but it certainly makes a dramatic difference in the severity of the crash.

Maybe the women were wearing belts and the police don't want to give that out because it may undermine the message about seat belts saving lives (which they do).

Some crashes are just not survivable, belts or not. I just don't believe this was one of them.

I'm not reading anything more into this than an unfortunate accident where the girls were very likely driving too fast for their abilities. I don't see the police with an agenda here. I believe for there to be an agenda there needs to be an objective. To lull us drivers into believing we should slow down does not seem plausible to me.

sure would be a lot worse if they killed other people with thier recklessness.

tragic that someone died for sure...but imagine how outraged we would be if these women killed someone by speeding excessively., its not like the area that this happened was near the permiter or something, it was in the heart of a residential area...someone could have easily been walking or driving along or the any member of the family could have been in the garage working on that car...

These women cared about everyone else just as much as if they were shooting a gun off randomly as they drove.

I sure hope that it wasn't something mechanical like a stuck accelerator pedal.

I think thats the message that has to be put out there by the police, MPI and every one else. Tragic as this crash was (it sounds like it was not an accident), the only good thing, if you can call it that, is that no one else was injured. While I don't believe that death is a suitable penalty for speeding, it is fortunate that, as in other cases, an innocent bystander was injured or killed. Everyone be sure to show this one to your kids who have licenses. Speed does kill.

Was it the driver or the passenger that died? Anyone know or didn't they release the details?

I understood it was the passenger.

That could be a whole 'nother thread. Looks like the drivers side was less damaged than the passenger side... does this indicate that the driver was the female?
