holly golightly wrote:Back to the incentive thought, make student loans for degrees that draw students out of province dependant on a contract stating that once the student graduates from university they will be required to stay in Manitoba for X amount of time (5 years for example) to pay off the awarding of the student loan. they will still have to pay back the monetary portion of the loan but this will also guarantee that if they are educated here. They will at least have to pay back the community for 5 years. Some reserves that have bursaries for university students (paid for by you and me) have these types of contracts attached to the awarding of such bursaries and "loans" for post secondary education.

I see you took a page out of the TV show Northern Exposure. Wink
I have no problem with that if the student is dependant on loans but if they pay their own way or the parents pay then they shouldn't be forced to stay in Winnipeg.

Yeah, but "pay your own way" should mean "pay the total cost, not the subsidized cost".

Manitoba and all places, benefit from people who were educated elsewhere, moving in.
I'm against people being forced to stay here after school but if they choose to stay here due to incentives, then that's fine. So long as the choice is their own.

Maybe we charge all students full price for their education.

Then we give them a tax credit for each year they stay in Winnipeg after they graduate, up to 5 years. I think the province is considering this for MD graduates.

If they want to move the nano-second after they graduate no problemo. No tax rebate.

Neat. No muss. No fuss.

I don't know too many people who could cough up ten times the cost of tution for even one year, let alone 2-4. Doesn't sound realistic.

I think the incentive is the way to go , as you say we can't force them to stay.

They do in the US.

I'm all for government subsidizing our kids secondary education. I just do not agree with the notion it is okay to get such an education only to frick off and Canadians don't get to take advantage of that child's subsidized education.

so let go with the current funding way.

And... the GOVERNMENT portion of your education is forgiven over 10 years if you stay working in the country? if you leave you have to pay back whatever amount based on years service.

Actually, the best solution is to eliminate all business taxes and make Manitoba a "have-province." Doing so will create the appropriate business climate for good jobs to be created and will allow people to build up their wealth rather than simply tread water Doer-style.

I'm simply speaking the honest, undeniable truth.
I figure if this forum gets more popular, we can truly attract peeps who will want to create a provincial grassroots political movement. I'm too tied up with courses to devote time to it.
You could host a get-together of like-minded peeps and the curious. There might be enough folks here who want change badly to get even a little ball rolling.
