Signs of the coming apocolypse.... me and GOM sort of agree on something.lol!

I agree with GOM, if your going to up and leave the day after your heavily subsidized medical degree is awarded, you should have to pay the real cost of your degree back to the university. If I'm not mistaked the upwards of 80% of the true cost is subsidized in medical fields.

I still stand by my position, that while people are free to do what they want in this country it's still morally the wrong thing to do IMHO. And I've know far too many people entering that field with the intent to leave asap. In my opinion that's just being a greedy sob.

Gummy's right. College and university students pay a small portion of the actual cost of their education, something like 10%. Taxpayers pay the lion's share.

GC, did you attend any post-secondary institution? If so, we taxpayers paid for most of it.

Yes I did attend a post secondary institution and I had a student loan which I paid back in full!

I still disagree and have no problem with people leaving to find work that pays more. I have more of a problem with my tax dollars paying for welfare then I do with my tax dollars going toward education.

Ripping off the taxpayer is wrong, no matter how it's done imo.

I have no problem with their freedom to go, it just seems wasteful to spend precious few dollars on them to lose them to the states . I feel we should get something for the investment , at least in health care .

We're not responsible for them once they've left. We just have to certify that they are non-assholes when they leave. Sno'mor.

to give welfare recipients degrees along with the money! Then they will be counted as the right kind of taxpayer rip-off! Wink

Maybe the solution is not to use tax dollars to fund Universities and Colleges. Let parents save for their children's educations or take out loans....I am saving for my kids...Even if I had the best solution it would never be implemented. I really don't want my kids going to school and then being told that they can only work in Canada because the tax payer helped fund their education. Now there's freedom....

Instead of funding the universities directly, that money could go into a student loans system, which would provide incentives for working in Canada.

Or at least reverse the funding percentage...
ie taxpayer funded to 10%... and the rest from students.... with very heavy incentives for starying in Canada.. ie 10% paid back per year.

The education might COST you 150K then... but its not like you would actually be paying for any of it.

Back to the incentive thought, make student loans for degrees that draw students out of province dependant on a contract stating that once the student graduates from university they will be required to stay in Manitoba for X amount of time (5 years for example) to pay off the awarding of the student loan. they will still have to pay back the monetary portion of the loan but this will also guarantee that if they are educated here. They will at least have to pay back the community for 5 years. Some reserves that have bursaries for university students (paid for by you and me) have these types of contracts attached to the awarding of such bursaries and "loans" for post secondary education.
