Listening to the radio this morning (100.7), they were playing some interviews from a snowmobile club in Beausejour (sp) asking the favourite stories of the members.

The best story I heard was a woman who said:
"My friends & I were out riding some trails several years ago, when I was just learning to ride. Apparently the RCMP were closing some of the trails, and there was an officer standing in the middle of one as I approached. He had his hand up to tell us to stop, but I didn't recognize he was an officer at the time...and...as I rode past him down the trail...reached up and gave him a high-five."

It was asked if they pursued her and her friends...and she said they hadn't.

Anyone on here have any good "snow" stories?

Snow stories, of any kind are welcome.

Watching the snow fall down outside right now really prompted my post.

A snow story for me would be a ski trip my brother & I went on in the 80s.

A small ski mountain in the Appalachians (Sawmill Ski Resort). Great place for learning to ski, and to develop some skills.

Between each of the runs are groups of trees. Several of us were running along the treeline and saw a rise which had been packed and many were using as a "jump" of sorts. We were young and energetic enough to "walk" up the mountain...put our skis back on and then ski the "jump"...then walk back up and do it again.
My brother saw us goofing off, and came barreling down from above us, and from a slight angle....NOT the angle he should have been running to hit the "jump".
When he did hit it...it launched him into the trees...about 10' off the ground...till he hit a large branch with his chest...which flipped him over backwards...till his ski boots hit the branch as he turned upside down...and he hung for a few seconds on the front of his skis...till the safety releases let go...and dropped him out of the tree into a bank of snow (he had the luck of landing on his side instead of his head)...where the skis now fell from the tree like spikes...sticking into the snow on either side of his head.

Fortunately there was nothing broken...though he had bruises across his chest for a couple of months.

He was more cautious on jumps, and especially near trees...but got back on his skis that same day.

Well back in ontario, I lived in a small town and it was easier to do things like snowmobiling and camping.

Despite the fact that I was born in Winnipeg, I am so sick of winter anywhere. My tolerance for cold is diminishing quickly, although I think I'm in the minority of Canadians who prefer hot weather over cold weather based on the many people I've talked with. I'm almost thirty years old, and I can't see myself spending another 30 in a wintery climate. If I ever have the opportunity to move to a warm climate for work, I'm jumping all over that beast!!!!

I am the oppsite of you. one winter I was in south america and it made me actually depressed in till I was back in canada. The day I left there it was 42 degrees C and when I landed here it was minus 42 with the wind and I instantly felt happy again. My dad thinks I need help as he can't see why cold would make any one happy. But this is home, I beleive my mind needs 6 - 8 months of this to keep it in line. lol!

Snow story #1
I had spent the Sunday night "tuning" up our skidoo to see how fast I could get it going. Monday getting back from school on the bus I wanted to see if I got it going fast enough to head through the trail and beat the bus back to the highway. ( 2 miles only ).
I jump off the bus and run to the house. Throw my school stuff inside. Kick off my shoes and throw my boots on. Run out to the skidoo. Damn it wont start (stupid -35). Throw open the hood, quickly prime the engine. BROOMMMOMOM... Jump on and gun it. bus has a 5 minute start on me...no way I can make it if I take the regular route... I jump the tracks and go flying across the field....holy carp this puppy is moving...Make it to the highway about 2 seconds before the bus. Damn o Damn was that ride ever fast. I turn around and decide to gun it back... get up to top speend. The left ski snaps, drags under the sled and yeehaa!!!!! tossess me off has it goes tumbling along. BUT i did not tumble. I actually slid on my forehead for about 10-15 feet before starting to tumble. Dazed I get up walk over the the sled that is still running. Try to gun it.. it dont move. hmm...flip it on its side.. see the busted ass ski all twisted and crap... fix it enough that it will move and head home. Go into the house and check why there is blood all over the place and note the scrape on my forehead that is about 5 inches across and 4 in height, starting to feel real dizzy and cant concentrate, but being a "kid" no way I am telling my parents what happened so I just go to bed...and promptly fall asleep not a good thing. Especially since I have a speech on global warming to do in school the next day. I wear my toque over the scrape out of the house the next day. (HA! and you thought they were only good for keeping your ears!). go to school still pretty messed up and slurring my voice. I do the speech anyway get a measly little 89. Whatever who cares I wrote it on the bus on the way to school and never praticed it once.. meh its only one grade.

But the kicker to the story? The part that makes it fun? Thus was born a new sport... See who would jump of thier skidoo and tumble the farthest.

Ie.. get going at a decent speed.. Stand up still holding the throttle...and jump off and tumble... man was that fun. And I ended up not being winner as I had one friend who was even crazier then me....

crazy snowmobile story. actually its pure stupidity. funny though. so my friend was jumping his sled off a high snow bank and my other buddy had his truck parked so the back of the truck was facing the snow bank. Now my buddy on the sled was jumping and noticed that he was landing about 15 feet in front of the truck. So he got the bright idea to jump over the truck. But he didn't tell any body and little did he know was that the buddy who owns the truck was about to leave. so you hear the sled screaming towards the snow bank and the Buddy in the truck starts to pull away and BAM! snowmobile right off the hood! haha and the kicker to this one... the track was studded and basically ripped the hood off! haha good times. I have never laughed so hard in my life!

snow story #2
I went to a school that had a smallish hill on the grounds as well a bunch of crazy carpets for the kids to all randomly grab and head out to play during recess/lunch time. Now I dont know if anyone has ever "supermanned" down a hill.. but the gyst is ..

One person lays on the crazy carpet on their stomach holding on. The other person takes a running start and jumps and lands on his/her stomach on your back and the force gets you going at a much faster rate then if you just pushed started yourself.
.... back to story.

So My friend and I are supermanning down the hill most of the lunch hour and we end up in line behind my other friend who brought his wooden tobagon to school that day. off he goes with 3 other guys on the sled. and I have the fun of being the guy on the bottom of superman this time. So Friend number 1 comes running up and jumps on my back at the time that friend number 2 is only half way down the hill.. Because of the increased speed we start catching up real fast... at the point thatone of the guys on the wooden sled foot falls to the side and the wooden sled starts to turn. I notice what is happening but cant throw friend number 1 off my back fast enought and BAMO!... face first at high speed right into the wooden sled.. busted glasses knocked out two teeth and actually realligned some permanent teeth without knocking them out such that now my teeth are crocked... anyway.
So blood spurting all over the place and the only thing I am concerned about is trying to find all the pieces to my 2 month old glasses and about how much trouble I am in for breaking them.
Everyone is freaking out because bright red blood on nice white snow looks prety damn ghastly.. but again all I care about is my glasses. I am searching through the snow and the teacher runs up thinking oh my god he is freaking out what should I do. She grabs me and tries to hold me down and I tell her to stop I need to find my glasses and she says oh. I thought you were crying because of the pain. I said what pain? then I notice all the blood everywhere. ooo and there was my other lense..eh...

super fun

snow story #3
2 months after snow story #2. We had an announcement come over the school intercom at about 10AM. Attention all students and teachers. Please prepare to leave school for the day NOW!. Buses will be leaving in 20 minutes.
What the?
A severe blizzard has started. Road travel will be impossible in less then 1 hour. ( hrmm.. gonna be a problem considering my bus ride is 1 hour in length)
So we all scramble and get on the buses and whooeee is it ever snowing.. bus gets sorts of stuck a couple of times.. has to turn around and take a side road around this one massive hill that it just can not make it up because it is so slippery... kids get off at home.. some kids left at end of 1/2 mile long driveways to struggle home...we finally make it to my friends place about 20 minutes from my house and there is no way the driver is making it further. so we all get off at his house. (its just my family, his family and one other cousin of his left at this time anyway) and walk in the 1/2 mile to the house. takes a long time through all that snow. Not a problem call mom tell her that we are staying there and everything is groovey... We stay inside all that day because it is so bad it aint even funny. next morning we wake up and it has snowed about 3 feet... and very hard packed drifts in some places are at least 7 or 8 feet high. WOOOOHOOOO SNOW DAY!!!!! (turns out two and that half day off from school). We spend the entire freakin day outside digging a massive tunneling system through the snowbanks... we make snow foxholes and everything all connected by undersnow tunnels. Cap the day off by collecting all the busted branches off the top of the snow and having a cool bonfire right in the middle of the driveway roasting marshmellow and everything.
Man another one of those would be fun.

When I was in Scouts, we did a "winter camp" at a pretty cool place. Basically it was a bunch of cabins on a hill over a lake.

For size comparisons, the hill would be about twice as high as Garbage Hill, and figure there's about 20 buildings around.

Well, of course you have to do sledding, but at the bottom of the sled hill is one of the cabins...with a trail running down past that to the lake.

So all of us teen boys have to have contests (it's normal right?).

Contest 1: How many guys can we pile onto one sled/innertube (we had BIG tractor innertubes to use). I think our record was about 12 on an innertube and 6 on a sled.
Contest 2: How far can you go? if you were able to steer (the sleds could...and they were FAST)...so you had to miss the cabin at the bottom of the hill, go down the path, and out onto the lake. My brother and I went flying down (Superman style Wink), and made it 1/2 way across...we held the record for that entire trip.
Contest 3: How hard can you hit? Remember the cabin at the bottom? We went into a few of the "empty" cabins and stole mattresses off the bunks. Piled them up on their sides about 6 thick around the wall of the cabin facing the hill. Then we each took turns jumping on an innertube (sleds weren't allowed as they would rip the mattresses)...and racing down the hill to hit the mattresses as hard as we could. My brother won. He came flying down (just after me)...and just as he hit the mattresses, he ducked into the tube with his feet and head (so basically it's like riding inside the hole of a donut)...when he hit...the tube squeezed and literally popped him straight up and out of the hole...higher than my head (I was about 5' 6" then), and then fell back down and flopped on the tube.

Looking at my last story and this one...I don't know how my brother is still alive Smile).

my friends and i used to take an intertube and tie it to a snowmobile and then you would put 3 or 4 people on it and 3 more would run beside it in till the snowmobile was moving and then they would all jump on the intertube and then we would get the snowmobile up to about 50 mph and then turn and when all that weight on the tube would start swinging, it would get the snowmobile piveting around one ski and then the bodies would start flying off the tube! it was amazing the distance people would fly off this thing! haha i dont know how we never killed some one! lmao

Ok...story 3.

Industrial/Office Parks in New Jersey are usually not plowed right away when there's snow/ice...especially on the weekends, as they target bus routes & major thorofares first.

So...they get pretty slick on the roads.

About mid-season one year, (so there were piles of snow on the corners where plows had been through earlier in the year) we got about 3 inches of snow.

My brother, a couple of friends and I grabbed an innertube, a rope, and jumped in my ford escort and headed for the office park.

Now...we were crazy, but we weren't dumb...we know you don't tie the rope to both the car AND the tube...so we tied it to the car, and whoever was sitting on the tube would hold the rope, and someone would sit in the trunk with the lid open to be a "lookout".

So...I was driving, dragging my brother on the tube...got the car up to about 30mph, but had to go around a corner...so I started my turn and began to slide...which means I need to gun it to make the corner, or my brother would be UNDER the car. So...gun it I did...and that whipped him around the corner with us...where he decided it was time to let go...heading for a pile of snow left on the corner...which just happened to have been angled down to road level. So he hit...and LAUNCHED into the air over the top of the rest of the snow, and into a parking lot on the other side.

No injuries...just us crazy guys deciding "COOL"...it's OUR TURN to try it.

None of us went as high or as far as him...we would usually let go of the rope to early, or whoever was driving wouldn't time the turn right. Twice my poor Escort got buried in that snowbank Smile).
