Very smart move to help out the smallest businss' that rent space for about $1000 per month. Those tiny business' need whatever help that the city can afford to grow. If every one of those stores were to hire one more person, that would be huge.
Yea, Mayor Sam!

The business tax is a truly regressive tax. Its about time someone got around to getting rid of it. Good start.

The tax burden should be shifted 100% to individuals. Businesses should pay no tax whatsoever. Individuals should not be taxed on salaries or profits but only on consumption, ie. shopping.

Well, can't say that I'd go that far. Business should pay their fair share of property taxes (through rent if applicable) consumption taxes, licensing fees if appropriate (health inspections for restaurants), but the business tax is just a tax for the mere pleasure of putting yourself and your capital at risk and employing other people who in turn pay taxes.

what would the incentive for visitors to come to Canada be at that point? Would they not have to pay the consumption tax?

Clinton made $10,000,000 in 2006 on speaches.
At the aboriginal special price of $345 per 1500 seats=$517,000.
I would think Bush would get $250,000 U.S. minimun which is $300,000 Canadain, plus expenses, which would be considerable, as he will have an entourage of security, plus 1 person to help him spell the big words.
Some one in Australia is charging $1000 per ticket to hear him.

There's no income tax in the Cayman Islands and people have a high standard of living, even though goods and services cost more. Not sure how visitors could be exempted...

apparently the province? (maybe just city) has removed the small business tax completely now.

i was listening to the report on the news last night...and then the STUPID desk reporter asks the field one "so, how do they expect to recoup the $9M shortfall from removing that tax?"

I went off on that quick...it's as stupid as the water issue discussed before.

The POINT of removing a stupid tax like a business tax, is to encourage NEW business to form and taxes from those new businesses (sales, income, etc.) and the increased employment opportunities will EVENTUALLY offset the loss.

You would think governments that have been around for more than 100 years would stop thinking short-term (like to the next election), and start thinking long-term for the betterment of society in general!!!

The tax reduction is a good thing. Now let's target the job-restricting payroll tax.

CKY News reported the baker was going to realize $10k in savings. Global News did the same originally but added a disclaimer saying the baker admitted he was actually only going to realize $3k in savings. Somehow the savings were significantly reduced from the original announcement.

Another good blog spot by St Norberter: http://bgilchrist.wordpress.com/2010/12/02/the-numbers-behind-the-small-business-tax-cut/?blogsub=confirming#subscribe-blog

Kudos for breaking this down to more easily understood numbers. I think governments want people’s eyes to glaze over when announcing such things. This helps to bring perspective to matters.Well done.

I buy a lot of cupcakes from that guy! lol
The cupcake baker doesnt know anything about tax savings , because at 1% tax rate on $3000 , I think that his profit of $300,000 is pretty doughy!
