Canwest News Service February 19, 2009

The Canadian Football League is calling on its fans for input into potential rule changes.

The league announced Thursday that fans' suggestions will be discussed at the league's rules committee meeting early next month in Hamilton.

`We know our fans have the best interests of our game at heart, that they cherish its traditions, understand what makes it unique, and yet want to make it even stronger,' commissioner Mark Cohon said in a statement.

`So it makes perfect sense to include them in our annual discussion of rule changes. It's part of what we mean when we say This is Our League: it belongs to every Canadian who cares about the CFL, and supports it.'

Fans can submit their ideas online at www.cfl.ca/rules or by e-mailing at rules@cfl.ca by Feb. 27.

Ever thought the CFL rules needed changing? 5 yard zone? Rouge? Here is your chance to be heard.

I have always hated the rouge. This is a reward for failure and I'd like to see it removed.

The rouge is... the single point for missing a field goal?? Or rather for getting the ball out the back of the end zone?

Yes.

And speaking of end zones I'd like to see them reduced in size and the same size in every city.

Too bad we can't "in-put" on the cheerleaders' uniforms. What a Face

Is Edmonton the only city with odd-shaped end zones?

For the CFL field to fit inside the running track at Commonwealth stadium, the corners of the end zone are truncated. But as far as I know, all the end zones are 20 yards deep in the CFL. Which is fine, IMO.

And I would add that I am all for the rouge. It's not rewarding failure, just rewarding a lesser accomplishment. If the defense was better, the offense wouldn't be in a position to score a rouge.

The end zones are all 20 yards.

They are? I'm not saying you are wrong, but it seems to me every end zone is a different size...

Maybe an optical illusion because of the different paint schemes?

What other controversial rules are there? I don't notice a problem with any of the current rules, as long as they are applied fairly.

I really hate the no yards penalty, why penalize the kicking team for having good coverage?

Is that one for the physical safety of the returner?

For sure that is what it is for. But the NFL system works. Call for a free catch or catch it and take your chances...

Nah, I don't like the NFL's fair catch system.

Or any other player that is on-side. If I were a coach, I would have a guy on-side anytime we were punting into the wind. I don't understand why they don't do that more often.
