I did not think that was possible. I assumed they had a several billion dollar rainy day fund. That deficit will be nuked very quickly when oil prices go back up.

I thought they paid out the rainy day fund to the taxpayers with King Ralph Cash.

Alberta Finance Minister Iris Evans said the province's Heritage Savings Trust Fund, a rainy-day savings hit, has been hit particularly hard by the current global financial turmoil. There are estimates its value has dropped by $3-billion from $17-billion.

So they have gone from an $11 billion dollar surplus to a $1 billion dollar loss!
Amazing change! I wonder what programms they were managing to spend all that oil money on?
Loss of 15,000 jobs. Let us hope oil goes back to $147.
