Organic Oranges- incredible taste

My wife purchased some organic oranges from Superstore, as she has switched to organic everything.

The most incredible taste !

What are we eating when we eat vegetables and fruit grown the ordinary way?

The organic food all tastes so much better, that I wonder if we are tasting the fertilizers?

That makes sense doesn't it?

Organic stuff is also way fresher than non-organic. It doesn't store as long.

Is the explanation for the better taste, that we aren't eating the chemicals from the fertilizers?

Does anyone know?

the explanation for the taste is that you have to convince yourself it's WORTH the double cost of organic....so your taste buds tell your mind the money tastes good.

but the real kicker is.... what does organic mean to the person supplying the product that says its organic?

they just did a blurb about organic stuff on ctv news (i think it was last month).

anyway...basically they said there is no real standard for "organic" stuff in the stores...that it basically means that the items were grown without using CERTAIN chemicals or additives...not that they were grown using NO chemicals or additives.

that apparently there are groups trying to get that changed...though they are having a tough time getting legislation for it.

They did say you're better off buying from a roadside stand, or farmer's market than at any grocery store.

There are Canadian standards.

My parents owned a certified organic herb farm. There were quite stringent requirements to get the Certified Organic label and an inspection of the premises was actually done and they ALMOST missed it because a farmer had used fertilizer on a nearby 1/4 section of land two years prior.

but that's to qualify for a specific "label".

But there's more than one label out there...and who says anyone has to have one?

If a store decides they want to sell "organic" veggies...and a farmer comes along and says "hey, I grow organic veggies"...and the store buys it from them...well, that's between the store and the farmer. And the only way anyone would know the farmer was dumping chemicals on the veggies to make them grow faster and bigger, would be to realize he's the one selling them to the store...which would be unlikely unless there was some kind of reaction from the chemicals.

the only thing I see when I look at "organic" foods in a grocery store...is a price tag that's usually 50% higher than it's "non-organic" counterpart. And I've eaten both...and there's never been a noticeable taste difference for food that's FRESH and RIPE!!! The problem with most of the "non-organic" food, is that it's picked early...and ripens while being shipped to stores...so when you see them in your store...fresh off the truck usually indicates another week or two of "ripening"...and a "sale" means they have probably been there that week or two.

And veggies/fruit that have ripened on a vine/tree ALWAYS taste better than those that ripen in a truck or warehouse...because the added nutrients through the growth process are most significant then. It's why tomatoes you pick "ripe" off the vine, usually taste better than the green ones you pick and then leave in your basement to ripen in the dark.

The organic strawberries that we bought were absolutely fantastic in their taste. These oranges were the most incredible tasty oranges that I have ever eaten, and I have aten a lot of oranges. I wasn't trying to find out why they aren't worthwhile because someone read a U.S. article that there was no taste difference. The tast difference is remarkable, and I wsnted to know why?

Organic fruit stays on the vine/tree longer before it is picked.

So my question now is - Is there any way to get that taste from the cheaper stuff?

I have purchased a box of oranges at Costco that when we got to the last ones a week later, the taste was better .

I don't mind paying more for better tasting organic veggies and fruit because we really do not spend that many dollars at a time. The tomatoes and the strawberries were certainly worth it to us.

easiest (and cheapest) way...is to grow your own.

but you'll have to wait a few months for them to be ready .

This one is part two, it has the taste tests.

One reason for increased cost of 'organic' food is that organic is a regulated label that cannot just be used by anyone. There is an organic 'association' that actually regulates the use of the word. While good for consumers that we would not be buying anything labelled organic with actual chemicals in it, it increases costs to farmers and they have to follow specific guidelines etc.

Also you should consider that some produce is very susceptible to pests without topical chemical sprays, this increases waste, lowers produce size, and leads to higher costs.

Unfortunately many produce does not need chemicals at all to grow fine yet get hit with pesticides anyway. I wish food would be guaranteed natural instead of organic. But that is tough to come by.

When you say "regulated", is there a specfic Act which regulates this? Is it federal or provincial?
