Hot 103 and Loveys BBQ have teamed up and a portion of all sales today go towards Osbourne house.

Good cause, good food.

They are not saying WHAT portion of proceeds, but imagine a few thousand will be raised for sure. Plus the mention of the place and getting fundraising exposure sure helps.

NOW... on to the issue at hand.
The reason for the funding shortfall is that they had realized that they were not getting as much donations as usual ( quite common in Winnipeg these days.. too many projects on the go that are short ) so they started sending notes back last Octoberish saying that they would like to apply for more funding from the city. Long story short the city said.. No, we dont have the money available.

Which, well quite frankly the city cant be expected to just make a half million materialize like that. I do take issue with the way the person from Osbourne House is blaming the city for not giving the funding. Its called apply for consideration people.. you should not base your budget on funds that have not been promised.

Winnipeg has a reputation of being a very generous city, most generous in Canada if I recall correctly.

The problem as I see it there are SO MANY AGENCIES trying to provide the same services. Time to amalgamate these centres and fund the few and make them more efficient.

That is indeed one of the problems I see as well. Because of all the overhead and insane amount of support dollars goes to non core services such as administration.

Never mind the amount of savings that could be identified if they all made purchases as one entity.

Sure they all "talk" and meet as groups and know what services each other offers and such.. for the most part... but a greater efficiency can be realized that will offer more services for the same dollar.

There is zero overhead when you send in a donation to the Ralph Brown Community Center ar 460 Andrews Street, Wpg, R2W 4Y1. You will get a tax receipt and please note, that Cheque donations over $999 will be picked up by their President at your house or place of work!

Thank goodness that there are so many agencies out there doing good. I just met with one agency on saturday who need a non profit agency to work through. This lady has been doing this for 10 years, raising money to pay out to at-risk residents of the North End, who do odd jobs and get paid right away for their work. No overhead and a very good plan!

WHy do they need a non profit to work through? They can just create their own.

"who do odd jobs and get paid right away", hmmm, I bet there is no tracking and reporting of the earnings for those who are on income assistance, or for tax, CPP and EI purposes.

Also, this type of service is not within the mandate of the CIty, it is clearly a provincial responsibility. A lot of politics behind going public with this issue. Its more fun for a socialist to blame Katz and the city rather than do nothing Selinger and the communist hoarde.

Declining gifts is an issue facing all charities.

CHecking their T3010, hard to figure how they come up with a number of $450,000. FOr the past 4 years, they have consistently received about $1,400,000 from government, which I would assume to be provincial. In addition, their income from gifts has been 2011- 140,000, 2010 - 190,000, 2009 - 356,000 and 2008 - 212,000. I would assume the 356,000 to include a windfall, such as proceeds from an estate, or even a gift towards capital.

They've never received 450,000 in donations so why rag at the City for that amount.

The city should take the easy route and stop funding all social agencies and related expenditures. Focus on nursing the city itself back to health and let the socialists on Broadway fund all social agencies.

Then the province can centralise all such funding and eliminate redundancies.

Yeah I know, it sounded hilarious as I was typing it...

I never will understand why the city takes on so much of the social funding that no other areas in MB do.

might I suggest they give more money to the Aspers? That seems to be working pretty good for them
