I had a gout attack Thursday/Friday, originating in my knee, that was the most intense pain I've felt. And debilitating...

Quick visit to ER, doctor diagnoses gout, filled prescription, pain gone.

Scared the @#$% outta me.

What food & drink should be avoided? I already don't drink and rarely eat read meats.

For me my trigger is definitely beer, and red meats are ok for me but if I have any more than a couple beer in an evening I'm not walking, spirits are ok too. From what I've read people can have different triggers. And for what it's worth mine is in the big toes, and sometimes ankles, not the knees (thank Christ) Never had a prescription but generally NSAIDs are the way to go and no way am I letting them draw the fluid from my joint. When I first get symptomatic I take a days dose of aleive at one shot then follow regular dose for a few days till completely gone and it works for me. I used to suffer for the whole glare up until I figured out that regime. Plus hot bath really help release my joints when they seize right up in pain and I find walking it out helps too

Some people make fun of gout for having a pain in the toe and taking time off work, but for me it's the second worse pain only to when I had my appendix burst. On wiki page it shows a demon biting on the big toe and when I saw that image I immediately connected with it, that is the most accurate image ever imo

I've had one previous gout flare up, maybe 20 years previous, and it was in the big toe. It was beer triggered too.

I had a friend who suffered from gout and he would avoid seafood. Not sure if that is a trigger but when he had a flare up he wouldn't go for dim sum with us.

Seafood especially shrimp will cause a flare-up within hours. It only happens once/yr but when it does - I can't walk because of the unbelievable pain in the left big toe. I finally connected it to shrimp this past Christmas.

Its unreal how painful a toe can provide, priceless info when you figure out what causes it, and awesome when you get the cure.
