I heard recently that Wal-Mart will open a fourth Supercentre on Kenaston, adjacent to the IKEA, and then shut down the other Wal-Mart store on Kenaston near Safeway.

The three Supercentre stores already announced are:

Winnipeg South store at the corner of St. Mary's Road and Bishop Grandin Boulevard its Winnipeg Central store at the corner of Empress Street and Ellice Avenue
Winnipeg West store at the corner of Portage Avenue and Buchanan Boulevard.

Is the SuperCenter going to be larger than the store on Empress?

The Empress store seems to have taken space away from general merchandise to put in a bigger food department.

and of course the city will let them instead of saying. uh no and of course walmart wont pay for any upgrade to roads and the area will turn into an even bigger nightmare then it is already going to be when IKEA opens.

DeanK- stop complaining or else Katz won't allow you to travel along route 90 to get there! lol

Is this an enlargement to their existing store?

If so, no one should even care!

I thought the Walmart on Regent was supposed to be a supercentre as well?

Because there wasn't enough shitty WalMart around here already?
That particular area on Keneston has enough grocery stores w/ Sobey's and Safeway and Costco in there.

Exactly. They already lesser-Wal-Marts, hence the desire to open a supercentre store.

The public will vote with their wallets...

None of the the Wally World "Supercentres" are really Super Centres anyway.

Maybe call them "Wannabe Centres" until the Province gets rid of the antiquated Sunday limited hours.

Have you noticed most of the Walmarts have taken down their "24/7" signs? even their "24 Hour" signs are down.

I don't really care about 24/7. 8am - 10pm, 7 days a week works for me...

which is great...for you...

but what about those who work shift work?

Or those late-night diaper runs?
Or when you need some Nyquil?

And there have been numerous times I've finished a late meeting, or activity...and remembered I was supposed to swing by the store on my way to it for something the next day...it's always comforting to know I could run in at midnight and grab something quick.

And the added employment...figure an extra 20-30 people per store...so another 100 or so jobs available...maybe more.

they are back to 24 hours now. Dont know if it just for Christmas or what.

BUT.......were they making enough money to actually be open those extra hours?

What did those who work shift work do before??? If you need diapers or NyQuil at 3 am Shoppers Drug Mart is open 24/7.

I have purchased Nyquil at 3AM at a 7/11

I have also woken up friends and neighbours at 3AM for medicine before stores were open 24 hours.. heck before stores were open passed 7PM

That's like saying we shouldn't build better roads because we could all drive just fine in the 50's on the roads that are there now.

And not all Shoppers are open 24/7...only a select few.

Are the WalMarts 24/7 Dean? or just till the Saturday shut down, Sunday 12-6, then reopen Monday morning?

And WalMart did produce a study that they do make money by staying open 24/7...as they still have to hire 20 people to work in the store...but just for stocking shelves and cleaning...now they can have workers to multiple tasks...and cover the tills as well.

I've been to the WalMart on Empress at 3am on a Tuesday...and there were probably 100 or so customers in the store. If each of them spend $10...that's probably the Salary for the 20 workers that evening...so it probably does pay to stay open.

Not sure that I care. But I am assuming they follow the law.
