Greyhound threatens Manitoba.

Manitoba reacts by throwing money at them to continue being exclusive

Alberta gets threatened, and eliminates Greyhounds exclusivity.

Well...there's a business opportunity....or not.

Manitoba should have called their bluff right from the start.

It could be...if there's a demand for a regular route.

Someone looking for that opportunity should be talking to the local businesses, schools, medical facilities about providing service...even if it's only 2 or 3 days per week...and then perhaps get contracts for other remotes for the same.

If a regular contract can be established...then adding "fare-based" travel is a good add-on.

Maybe small hub-and-spoke operators can make a go of it.

I drove a 12 passenger van on a smaller unserviced route in saskatchewan. It worked well for all involved. sometimes passengers, most times lots and lots of cargo. Mind you Alberta and saskatchewan have a lot more smaller towns and such close together, even in the more northern parts then Manitoba does.

I believe the problem is that the government wants a regular daily service to many remote areas that don't have enough customers to support the business.....hence the constant loss senario.

All the more reason governments should not be in the service business. Ideology often trumps common sense (and the need to win votes).

Exactly. I resent having to subsidize someone living in the boonies.

The "bus" I drove went twice per week. Wednesday and Saturday. Twas enough for the area and that is all it could support. You wanted more service then that, you drove the trip yourself.
