Should selinger be involved to the extent he and his party have become?
By: Martin Cash, Winnipeg Free Press

In a last-ditch effort to save jobs from Main Street north to Churchill, the provincial government is taking on the Harper Tories over their plan for the Canadian Wheat Board.
The $180,000-media blitz Premier Greg Selinger announced Monday will feature newspaper and radio ads along with an online petition that takes direct aim at Ottawa's plan to strip the Winnipeg-based CWB of its marketing monopoly.

Frankly I don't think Canada nor Manitoba should spend one cent in their efforts to influence the farmers. Put the issue to the farmers and let them decide.

No, he should NOT be spending taxpayers' money on this re-election ploy (that's all it is imo).

He cannot run on the NDP record so he needs something new to campaign on.

I very much doubt that this will have much of an effect on the vote outcome this fall.

1) Yes, the government should try to save jobs. BUT NOT LIKE THIS
2) Losing single desk marketing ability for Western Canadian farmers only. WILL NOT CAUSE THE WHEAT BOARD TO SHUT DOWN. They already have a heads up on most any other wheat and barley selling organization out there, so with proper planning they could in fact still be a powerful marketing board that still exists for the farmers that WANT THEM.

TWO is the important part here. everyone is saying they are being shut down. They are not. Their monopoly is simply being removed.

VERY good point.

Seems all the commie socialist bastards still want, what amounts to the government, doing their work for them in keeping the monopoly going.

And I can say it till the cows come home (heheh) but most people wont listen.

oh my god .we are losing jobs they are shutting down the wheat board!// nope. not true at all

Wheat board MIGHT shut itself down because they can no longer compete though eh?

I know several people who like having the wheat board, but hate the bloat of a head office like the one in Winnipeg.

The Free Press headline should read- Selinger Wastes $180,000 on a stupid ad campaign !
Our valued leader and the Conservatives ran on a platform of closing the wheat board, and we know that Harper is the 1st Prime Minister to do what he says.
Talk about stupidity from our NDP government!
This is incredible! What a waste of our tax dollars.

Some farmers are living in a time warp where they still believe that the market will beat a path to their door.
They still have to come to terms with it being the opposite.
They still have to come to terms with marketing being an intricate part of modern day farming.
The CWB should be just a part of the program and not all of it.

A few months have passed. Is there a general consensus on this issue yet?

What does a general consensus mean to Harper? He told us he plans on dumping the Wheat Board, and he got elected and he is dumping the Wheat Board.

Our rich NDP have spent $180,000 to advertise that harper shouldn't cancel it, but harper missed the 2 ads that were run by an NDP friend of Selingers government.

Such stupidity by our Selinger government , that I am embarassed to have voted NDP.

I wonder why no reporter has reported on what the Wheat Board does? How many bushels, they have bought at what price, and sold at what price?

What does the wheat board cost overall by the bushell in their marketing costs?

Not very clear what the cost is because there are 45 different varieties of wheat!

How many bushels does the Wheat Board sell, and what cost per bushel is needed to cover the cost of the Wheat Board?

What is the Wheat Board's budget?

Do you have to belomg to the NDP to get the bid a$$ salaries?

What are the big a$$ salaries?

Judge rules Ritz broke law by not consulting CWB

Oops...

Ritz and the rest of the arrogant caucus need to revisit this. Perhaps they can conduct a REAL plebiscite that every single registered farmer can vote in - not a selected few. Then, and only then, should the government shut down the CWB, if that is how the plebiscite turns out.

The CWB holds votes that dont include peeps to.. soo.

how do you decide who gets to vote.. .and how many votes that person gets?

Should a farmer who farms 10 acres get to tell a farmer who farms 10,000 what to do?

What is the answer? Farmer A that farms X acres and larger votes: all else don't? How about if farmer A farms 10,000 acres gets 10,000 votes and farmer B with 100 acres gets 100 votes? One vote per acre.

That should be per acre available too. No more only certain farmers growing certain crops. Give every farmer an opportunity to decide. Only fair method.

This is true.. because a huge number of farmers stopped selling wheat simply because they did not want to deal with the CWB anymore.

BUT....why limit it to farmers? Maybe I would farm wheat if the CWB was not there. Shouldn't every Canadian get a say in this?

Nope. Just people currently in the business of farming. Keep it simple: just the people that actually have a real stake in it...

But why can't the farmers that want to be part of CWB just continue, and those who want to sell on the open market do that. Isn't that the most fair "plebiscite" that anyone can run?

Like I buy my gas at a co-op, but that doesn't mean everyone has to.

So the Federal court ruled the Conservative government has broken the rules regarding cancelling the CW Boards monopoly!

Now what?

But, doesn't government actually make the laws anyway? So, how can Parliament change a law? Is there a law that laws can't be changed, and if there is, how do you change that law so you can change the law?

I'm confused.

because some farmers want to force you to make less so that they can make more

So, would the plebiscite force farmers from the east who are not currently part of the CWB become part of the CANADIAN Wheat Board?

Let's open it up to all property owners the world over and force them to grow only the crops the CWB wants.

That's the only real fair and equitable solution...
