Re Facing Up To Our Challenges (April 28): I am profoundly disappointed that you have chosen to endorse the Conservative Party. This is a government that has blown a surplus that it inherited from the Liberal government. The only reason why we have survived the recession is because of banking regulations that were put in place long before the Conservatives came on the scene.

They have prorogued Parliament and have shown a repeated contempt for parliamentary process and ultimately for the Canadian public. If you can’t bring yourself to support another party, don’t support any.

On the strength of this record, the Globe now again sees fit to endorse Mr. Harper, even as it accuses him of “disrespect for Parliament, abuse of prorogation, the repeated attempts . . . to stanch debate and free expression.” What logically consistent standards of evaluation are being applied by the editorial board?

Hang on: Did I read this correctly? Did the same newspaper that once published a front-page story lambasting prorogation as intolerable, that published an editorial insisting the long-form census be reinstated, and that at least appeared to care about the environment and the arts, women and first nations peoples, the Security Council and government transparency, just opt to take almost all of that back at once?
Although it is very good to see that The Globe and Mail did not automatically rush to endorse a left-wing candidate, its choice is baffling simply on the basis of its own track record.

The Canada I care about is more than just an economy. According to The Globe’s endorsement of Stephen Harper’s Conservatives, this country's financial health is more important than its democratic health. Never before have I felt my country’s moral decline more sharply than now.

Nice bit of satire, that. But seriously, can we look forward to your real endorsement tomorrow ... one that backs a tested party that will respect our parliamentary democracy, plays well with others, can govern capably and offers enlightened leadership?
