What a great program! Holmes goes into a home that usually has had some work done , or has been cleared by a home inspector, and rips everything down to find out and repair the terrible work done by the previous contractor.
Yesterday he went into a recently purhased nome, thet had a clean report from a home inspector.
The roof shingles were curling, the electic meter (fuses) was dangerously overloaded, the heating system had holes in the metal causing huge hot spots and a very cold upstairs. The cold air return was blocked , preventing one whole floor from heating properly, The windows weren't screwed into the window well (just loose), the outside garage port beam was rotten, and the supports weren't tied to the concrete foundation!
He kicked the family of 6 out, because the house was unsafe to live in, while he did the repairs with very knowledgeable sub-contractors.

most of the time he is bang on. Other times he seems out to lunch and full of himself

He is out to lunch and full of himself. I wonder if some of that work is staged....

He's pretty good. He may be arrogant about some things, but he makes good points when it comes to poor work. The parts of the show I don't like are when the Holmes lottery winners ( lets be serious... he shows up and they are practically winning half of a house ) get things replaced in the home that aren't part of the original complaint. He's more ( and his crew ) of a hero for getting the original work/repairs done properly. I don't see why a homeowner ends up with new appliances if they are simply having plumbing issues in their kitchen.

If they can keep some of the over the top stuff off the show, I'd say it would be close to perfect for me to watch. I like the fact they give camera time to the tradespeople for explanations.

They pay for 50% of the cost of the reno I thought?

and he dont do it cheaply.

He does it between 10-20% of cost. But yeah, the materials he uses aren't exactly bargain prices, but it's a pretty massive discount.

Best line was from someone I know who said that they were going down to Rona to see Mike Holmes and thank him personally for scaring her from ever buying another house.

I liked the guy, and the show, and then he started hawking products.
"Home Depot Home Pro professionals"
"Drink Nabob"
and then there's the whole Holmes line of tools. Just, wow, sellout. His arrogance will get the best of him, and he'll end up branding some piece of crap.

How can a renovation be $500,000? Anyone gone through that? lol

Not likely...his sponsor is Home Depot, not Rona Wink.

Yeah that was a perfect example of him going an extra ten miles. I wish they'd focus more on the problems ( which were numerous though... ) and not go crazy with the extras that aren't related.

I wish they quoted appx costs. What they did in taking out the whole basement and installing an inside weeping tile system was awesome, but so unrealistic.
Who has $400,000 to spend?
Maybe their father was Carson from the Conservatives, who is dating a known money laundering hooker?

Yeah for that amount of money, a wrecking ball and looking for a new home would have been a better option. I guess she only paid around $40k though since its so very heavily subsidized.

At least i learnt that no one in Winnipeg would ever contract any renovations with Holmes! lol
He sure uses some incredibly smart materials. I have never seen stuff that is glued against a concrete outside wall that wicks away the water. Very impressive to me, whose whole house did not have a single thing that was "up to code", when we bought it last year!
