Would anyone here know where I could purchase a telescope? I know Sears has them, but none I like. Funny as it sounds, its going to be a wedding gift, so i'm looking at $150 or less.

I looked on the Cabela's website, they only had rifle and spotting scopes.

I also bought one for a wedding gift a few years ago but I can't remember where. What I do remember is that you can't get a good one for under $400.

Is timing an issue? Get a copy of Shutterbug magazine or go to B&H Photos website out of NYC....do some price comparisons.....what you will get here will be overpriced.....or try Ritz Camera in Grand Forks

Yes, I know telescopes are expensive. I had one when I was younger. The most important thing I'm going to look for is the stand. Being able to locate and track a star is going to be more important than just seeing it. I think I'm going to try looking for a good used one.

There are camera shops that advertise in Shutterbug that are located in Toronto (henry's) and Calgary (Olds)....and I will buy where ever I feel like buying GOM Buying a telescope Icon_smile . I get far superior customer service from B&H and they ship internationally and know the places where i am contacting them from.....

You can't get anything resembling a good mount and tripod for $150, let alone an entire telescope. I'd suggest buying a good pair of binoculars if $150 is your budget. I made the mistake of buying a $300 telescope years ago and it was junk. A decent 4" refractor with mount and tripod is going to run you around $600-$800. A bit more for a 6" newtonian and even more for any type of compound scope.

Dont waste your money on a "toy" scope advertising 250x magnification.

Just my 2 cents.

Again, this is a gift, and not for myself. The telescope is probably going to end up being a toy to them anyways, but in order for them to not get frustrated and throw it out (keep them playing with it), I want to make sure they'll be able to use it. If astronomy is something they want to get into, they can build off of it.
