EDMONTON -- The owners of an Edmonton restaurant were fined $23,230 yesterday for "horrible and disgusting" conditions that included having mice skeletons and beetle larvae.

I love the line "Liu told court Hai Yen is "old school" and not up to speed on modern-day health regulations"

Ahhh, to long for the good old days when you could get good beetle larvae.

Sounds like the Foody Goody in Winnipeg, when they were exposed for serving dog and rat in their restaurants.

BTW, what is with all the threads about Edmonton, recently?

Foody Goody was closed down for serving dog and rat?LOL I know they were shut down for cleanliness, never heard of the dog and rat part though.

Can't say I heard about the dog and rat thing either and there have been several restaurants shut down for various reasons. I guess serving dog and rat makes it more dramatic that just being dirty.

I remember eating there once a few years ago with a couple of my buddies, and all of us without exception were sick for a couple of days afterwards. A couple of weeks later, they'd been shut down for health code violations. The restaurant was thereafter known as "Foody Poisoning" in our circle.

The dog and rat thing is news to me though... it's likely that typical urban legend stigma that seems to be unfairly associated with Asian restaurants.

We went to Foody Goody years ago when it first opened. I just didn't like it and never went back. I don't like most buffets as they make it look like you're eating at a trough. Used to take the kids once in a while so everyone could get what they want. Took them when they were older, but then wouldn't feed them for a week or so after, very economical.

Was there not a restaurant on Pembina over thirty years ago that had been serving cats? I do not think this was an urban legend as it was a zoology prof who discovered the bone difference in his peking duck.

Went to Foody Goody earlier this year for the first time.

Went to the washroom to wash my hands before eating, and someone had thrown up all over the walls.

Cheque please.

Needless to say, I didn't eat anything!

Went to old country buffet in Fridley whilst on vacation., Damn that was a nice experience.

Everything was super clean and very fresh. They used very shallow pans for the food in the buffet so as to it seems give it less of a chance to spoil.

I usually don't eat at buffet style restaurants. I did try Buffet Square on McPhillips and it was okay. It looked clean and the washrooms were clean.

We're a little reluctant to go back to that location I'm afraid.

Here in Trieste, there are absolutely NO cats in the Chinatown (not exactly Chinatown, just the area with more Chinese people) area, none at all...
AND, their young kids go to the docks downtown on the seafront, to yank up the giant jellyfish, and then they go running to the restaurants to cash in.

Mind you, I've also seen a cook making meatballs, with a cigarette in his mouth and the ashes were falling on the meat...
When I was in the military service, in 1983, there was a slab of Spanish beef stamped 1977, laying flat on the floor in a fridge. They made the meat one day, breaded. I did not eat it. Yik.
And finally, last week, on the way back from the UK, I stopped at a service station where they had a Nordsee Restaurant, (normally very good seafood) and I looked at the food on display, and left. Once again, yik.
Belgium, on the other hand, seems to be specialized in barbecued strips of baby ribs. Yummy. Now if I could only remember who liked eating babies...
oops
