Aside from the fact that the Russians are pretty broke too, and the Chinese would probably loose the war just by the fact that the Americans can hit every single one of their cities without even leaving the comforts of North America, it would be safe to say that a World War 3 isn't in the cards. The Chinese like the Soviets before them are good at masquerade and deception. When the cold war ended it was discovered that the Soviet threat wasn't nearly as bad as was thought by NATO.

One could look at the global situation and see that there is potential for lots of positive change to occur.

Russia and China are cashed-up - versus broke, as you say.

The last thing the Russians want is a war with the US. The cold war is proof that the Russians cannot sustain a long drawn out conflict. The Russian government is more involved with dealing with it's own internal issues with Georgia, and the Ukraine. I don't see a Russian threat to NATO anytime soon.

China though large in manpower lacks in even the basic military equipment for moving their troops. They only just got their first Aircraft carrier, and that was a purchase from the Russians. They lack key tactical and strategic pieces that would make a campaign against the US Suicide. The American Navy without any assistance from the Airforce and Army could lay waste to much of China long before it had a chance. I'm talking conventional warfare here, we won't even bring nukes into this battle.

The only way that China and the US will go at it, is if China makes a play for Taiwan.

Besides, what does Western Society really know about China? So much information is purely speculation and educated guesses. As I mentioned before, the Chinese are excellent at Deception and counter intelligence. The US Military probably has a pretty good idea of what China does and doesn't have. And I would also bet they have battle plans already to go in the even that China makes the first move.

Having said that I would imagine however that North Korea could become a problem. I would bet that we see an increase in military activity in the Korean peninsula within the next 5 years.
