oh CANADA!

so, my son tells me that several students in his class refuse to stand for oh Canada.


should I do something about this?

Absofrickinglutely! Why are they refusing? These kids need to be taught to respect the Canadian flag early.

What a bunch of wieners. I make my 3 year old daughter stand for the national anthem on Hockey Night In Canada!

We all reach stages in life where we need to rebel. That's the only reason why these kids are doing it. It's an easy way to be a badass.

You should bring it up to the staff.

yeah it came up because of the playoffs.

whenever oh canada comes on in my house I make everyone stand.. my one son said. gee sure would be nice if everyone stood at school and then apparently it got to they do it on purpose and because its

"NOT THEIR COUNTRY'S ANTHEM"

heh. I actually tear up a little almost every time I hear it, TV or not. But it is exceptionally awesome to be at a major sporting event and hear all the people singing along with it.

talked with the principal and he will be dealing with it.

ie. talking to the teacher and saying WTF? make these kids stand.

Who didn't get a little emotional during the Olympics when Canadians won Gold? Especially the hockey Gold?

I would discuss it with the teacher and principal to see why this is being allowed to happen. If there is a reason justifiable or not, these kids should not be in the classroom until after the morning announcements, they should be held in a different room with all of the other "abstainers". It used to be that way before the Lord's Prayer was removed from the morning announcements, kids who were not "Christian" were allowed to leave the classroom until the announcements were over.

And I agree, if you don't have respect for the country that has allowed you the privilege to live here, then go back to where you came from and deal with the reasons why you left.

I suspect many of the parents of these kids would give them a substantially tender reason if they found out they were being disrespectful like this.

Yeah that guy that yells at you just before the music starts to play or the singer starts to sing to either stand up.. and/or take your hat off at major events.

interestingly enough at 12 he is actually considering the military as an option, and not just because guns are cool.

I usually don't yell at people unless they are too far away from my reach but I have been known to remove a hat from a person's head on occasion. I have had some very strong words told to me as well as looks but I just say, respect the anthem and the country that you are in or get out. They always get their hat back with a very polite thank you from me when the anthem is over.

My kids as well as their friends know that if you come into my house, you must remove your hat and if you are out for dinner with me, all hats must be removed and placed away from the table. Call me old fashioned but it is the way I was brought up and they way we brought up our children. You can still see some of that respect today in the golf community, where at the end of 18 holes, you shake your opponent's hand and you always remove your hat before hand.

Are these kids Canadian? Or are they new immigrants?
If new immigrants I would get their names over to Harper! he will know how to deal with it! lol

I'm just doing it because she's three, and it's fun to hear her sing it.

I do it because I love my country and I love that song.

I even pulled over at the side of the road one day when it was on the radio.

admittedly that must have looked frucked up to the people driving by.

My daughter's school enforces the rule that every morning, at 9 am, when O'Canada is played, EVERYONE in the building must rise and stand still for the singing. Parents roaming the halls have to stop and sing. Teachers freeze. It's pretty wild, actually. I grew up with it being something that was done for assemblies only, so seeing it done daily, and enforced, is amazing.
