In Italy there's asphalt... And the special asphalt which drains rainwater also sucks up mud from the roadbase... Also leaves these big trenches in the middle of the highways. You should see how the semi's swing and swirve through them. affraid

Ah, so you are sick of Calgary too, eh? I don't blame you. That city isn't all it's cracked up to be; and less.

Some of Manitoba's worst bridges will soon be getting a facelift.

The federal government is fast tracking $175 million to fix-up some of Manitoba's infrastructure, in an effort to stimulate the economy.

Premier Gary Doer and MP Vic Toews made the announcement Monday morning.

Under the new arrangement the money will be spent over the next five years.

One major project will be replacing two bridges as part of the floodway expansion project.

They will be the bridges at highway #44 and at highway #15 east of the city.

The floodway bridges will cost about $47 million each to replace and the province will split the cost with the federal government 50-50.

CTV's Shaneen Robinson is working on this story.

Sad to say some bridges around town need to be replaced before these two for a once in 700 yr flood

I agree, the bridges do need some love before they start to fall apart and might aswell do it before they get that bad.

Personally, I think we could use a few more bridges. We should re-open the Elm Park bridge, and add another couple over the rivers.

Especially in and out of downtown. It's pure hell at rush hour on the Maryland, Osborne, Mid-Town, Provencher and Main St. bridges...unfortunately I can't think of one good spot to add another alternative route.

they should add another "freeway" style bridge. None stop in and out of downtown area! lol

Another? We don't have any as far as I know...

I don't know if we have too few or too many. The biggest problems are bottlenecks. Fix them and maybe our bridge capacity is sufficient. To fix some we implement traffic flow technology: electronic traffic light management; restrict access on some streets; develop more turning lanes; sometimes maybe have people manage the traffic.

Disralli is actually classed as a freeway. I donno by who, but some one has decided that it is.

I think that it was originally going to be part of a freeway-ish ring around the downtown are which never materialized.

By any reasonable standard, Disralli isn't a freeway. Sterling Lyon Parkway also makes me laugh. A 2-lane/4-lane road with traffic lights called a "parkway". It's our city planner's way of making us feel like a big city.

I have to go home and take my pet dragon for a walk. Sure he doesn't look like a regular dragon, being only 10" high and covered in fur, but I call him a dragon so that's what he is. Beware of dragon!

How come they call a parkway a parkway and a driveway a driveway?

You know, I have never really thought about that. That is a really good question!

Why are they called a "pair" of pants, when there's only one of them?

Because they don't really HOLD anything. Mostly they accompany your legs.

so I can just carry them around in my arms to avoid the social awkwardness of the question "WHERE THE HECK ARE YOUR PANTS???" to which I can reply right here in my hands officer....

and all will be well?

That brings to mind...those signs that say "no shoes no shirts no service" it doesn't say anything about pants.

It also doesn't say you have to wear those things...just that you have to have them.
