Eadie is in the news for asking for more money because he is blind again and now Steeves and the rest of the Secretariat committee are saying that they should get to run for MLA or MP without first giving up their councillor job.

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/Councillor-calls-provincial-rule-unfair-and-possibly-unconstutional-113904564.html

we REALLY REALLY need a way to remove sitting politicians from office between elections in this city/province/country.

There is a good reason for this law and its one that exists at the Federal, Provincial and CIVIC level. Its ridiculous to think that any politician could effectively campaign for another office and remain totally neutral when doing the job he/she is already hired for.

Not only that, but it is ridiculous to ASK citizen to PAY for that campaign by paying the politicians current salary.

You want a different position bad enough, then you should be willing to sacrifice for that position.

If this passes and there is no way it wont pass EPC and Council given who is on this committee and IF the province changes the law before the upcoming election. I can see 4 or 5 councillors throwing their hats into the ring. never mind if we happen to have a federal election soon and that law gets changed too.

unconstitutional my a$$, our constitution allows for LEGITIMATE restrictions on people, and this is definitely one of those restrictions.

Democracy in action....blah blah blah!

We all voted for these schmucks....just remember that!

I say we need term limits...but the majority's response is that's what elections are for. Fine.

Then what do you call this?

Agreed.

The double dipping for professional politicians needs to be curbed.

The extra coin for Eadie is troublesome also. As is the attitude that we should go well out of our way to accommodate him in his quest. I think we should encourage the disabled to stay in mainstream but there has to be a cost limitation.

I think I'm going to apply for a job as an ER physician. And when I get the job demand that they pay me while I go to school to get qualified to do the job. Oh, and I want them to pay fer my skoolin' too...

Yeah, I voted. I did NOT vote for the schmuck that represents my area. Nor was this topic on the ballot. I would have made my feelings on this matter be well known to the schmucks running.

That does it!

Time for a recall vote!

The Eadie situation bothers me.

Should anyone with any disability be able to be councillor? For the most part, Yes. Unfortunately there are some disabilities that would prevent you from doing anything and we should not have to make the extra effort for those ones. But we certainly should make the effort for most of them. But NOT on a case by case basis. And for the most part we already do make it so that Eadie can be a councillor.
oh noes... something submitted by the public and he cant read it. Then use your assistant. That is what they are there for. Oh noes.. I cant navigate buildings I am unfamiliar with THEN USE YOUR ASSISTANT. Seriously, what does this dude think he assistant is there for? To sit on his a$$ and not do anything? He is there to ASSIST YOU. If they are not doing the job you want FIRE THEM.

I just took another look at council. DAMN!... I am willing to bet there are more then 4 or 5 councillors who would jump on this band wagon and run for another office at the same time. Like maybe even 9 of them.

next up, a vote to raise councilors without disabilities salaries to keep pace with the disabled ones...

Do other councilors have an assistant also? What do those staff members do?

Maybe Eadie has a point in that his assistant should not be expected to do all the regular assistant things AND assist him with his blind-related needs.

To really make a fair judgement, you'd need to know more of how the assistant as well as Eadie spends his/her time, etc.

an assistant is not required in any form. But most of the councillors waste their allowance on one anyway.
