I don't think higher interest rates will have any effects on the price of homes in Winnipeg. With high taxes and empty bank accounts, mortgages are already hit hard with the present low rates...

I don't understand your reasoning. If interest rates go up then financing becomes more expensive, so first time home buyers will need to buy a cheaper house. For those who are on variable rates, or who have to re-negotiate fixed rates the monthly payments may become unreasonable and they have to sell and scale down. All this will trigger lower prices. I hope that interest rates will go up substantially, so that those people who do not base their lives on cheap debt will also get a shot at owning a house.

Interest rates will only go up if inflation is skyrocketing.

Inflation will only go up if the economy starts booming and people start making and spending money like crazy.

Call me skeptical.

Manitoba has been seeing modest inflation. Even deflation in a couple quarters.

Strange that housing is not incuded in consumer price index - this would probably indicate rampant inflation if it was.

The prices go up when there's high demand and low availability.
If you're retired and really want a bargain, then buy one of the many gorgeous mansions on sale throughout England. You'll love it.
Every single town has "for sale" signs scattered all over. The prices in the cities are prohibitive, while the countryside is getting alot more affordable.

Are rural Manitobans experiencing the same dynamic as rural England?
