Nominated by Prime Minister Harper, appointed by unanimous resolution to the newly-created position of Public Sector Integrity Commissioner in 2007, Christiane Ouimet suddenly resigned.
Prior to announcing the nomination, Mr. Harper told a group of senior civil servants that the government wanted to “restore faith in both politicians and the bureaucracy...” and ensure that public servants can safely report unethical or illegal actions.
A lawyer, Ouimet served with the federal government for twenty-five years, primarily in positions related to quasi-judicial functions, regulations, and audits. She was Executive Director of the Immigration and Refugee Board, Associate Deputy Minister at Public Works and Government Services and at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
