I reckon we'll know in 332 days eh....but, in any event, the campaign has started....

At the AGM in Brandon this weekend, McFadyen said that, if they gain power, Manitoba Conservatives will slam the brakes on a more expensive western hydro transmission line and plow the savings into road-building and CentrePort.

The Conservative leader also told reporters he would fire the Manitoba Hydro board of directors to make sure the Bipole III hydro line — which is to carry power from northern hydro dams to southern customers — is erected east of Lake Winnipeg, as the Crown corporation originally intended.

McFadyen needs to elevate his profile. Get a strong message out in front of all Manitobans. Take the high road: NO ATTACK ADS. Let selinger and the ndp show their true colours.

This election can't happen fast enough.

I say "Bring on the attack ads"!!!

Hit 'em hard and hit 'em often!

People need to always be reminded of just what this unelected dickhead Premier is all about....spending money we don't have on things we don't need.

"would fire the Manitoba Hydro board of directors"

why? They are not the ones who made the decision. They had a properly analyzed and decided route and were told to change it. So then they went with the next best.

If given the reigns to work with no political interference I am 100% positive the decision would be proper.

Don't be too certain Deank. Several members of the board are political appointees. Sort of like the senate.

oh yeah I know that. just sayin that BEFORE his honoury high muckkey muck Doer said.. No way! it was the way.

Also.. want to fire some people and save money? Toast off the boards of the various health regions and put people in there that have nothing to do with the NDP or unions.

DAMN!! that would be huge savings

Wouldn't the savings cover the cost of the Human Rights Museum overrun, and the new Stadium and pay for a Winnipeg Jets franchise?? lol

"promising to cancel a western hydro transmission line in favour of a cheaper eastern one and vowing to plow the savings into highways, transportation and the development of CentrePort"

sigh..

So what you are saying Hughie you damn financially incompetent moron is that instead of BORROWING MONEY for an investment in the ByPoll III project you will BORROW MONEY to put into other projects?

Here is a free hint for you.

DONT BORROW THE MONEY AT ALL. DONT SPEND MONEY YOU DONT HAVE.

Why did Hydro go the western route to begin with? I've paid little to know attention to this over the last year or two...

So there's no protesting reserves on the East Side? No unexplodable Canadian Shield sections? Unicorn preserves?

Wow. I might be on the verge of getting angry!

Seriously, Dean, if you are telling the truth, I'm buying a membership in the Provincial Conservative party this afternoon.

The chiefs had not yet begun to protest, the shield is tough, but not so tough that it can be managed with explosives

There might be unicorn preserves, only Doer really knows

Wow:

Tory leader Hugh McFadyen says the project is a burden on taxpayers. “You’ve got an added cost of seven thousand dollars for every Manitoba family right out of their pockets.”

"It is important to note that a World Heritage site on the east side of Lake Winnipeg will be a huge economic boost for Manitoba."

http://www.cpawsmb.org/news-topic/bipole-iii

a huge economic boost eh? How? ooo look an area that has not changed in 1000s of years all of a sudden gets a title..but is still extremely remote and inaccessible. yeha look at the pennies pour in!

The worst part is that people actually fall for this. oh my gawd.. we will have a title like the great barrier reef does, and man look at how much money the great barrier reef tourism pulls in from tourism.. we are going to get that money too!

They are also pretending that this will be of economic benefit as Eco Tourism is a booming industry.

Sooooooooo.....they want to save this area for tourism.

WTF is the matter with that picture??? It's like fricking for virginity.

Here's a reasonably good link with good reference information on the alternate routes:
http://energymanitoba.org/exp-imp_trans_b3.htm
It's a far more complicated issue than 'east side good, west side bad'. East side might be the better route to take, but it's also going to be far from a simple or fast process to switch. Hopefully for a change they take construction inflation and lost revenue into account when looking at the actual cost difference between the two sides if you switch at this time in a project, not base it in what would have happened had they made a different decision a number of years ago.

There are a couple of things from the Free Press article that make hope the Conservatives decide to pick a different leader before the Provincial election. First, as Dean pointed out, you can't take the money saved from going down the East side route and put that into anything. That money doesn't actually exist, it's just less debt that would need to be taken on, and I don't know what the split is between government and Hydro financing. The other issue is, why would he fire the Hydro board to make sure it would go down the East side? Hydro supported the East side and was told they couldn't use that route. That rationale for firing the board just makes him look stupid.

"Our plan would be to replace the board of Manitoba Hydro and reverse the decision," he said, accusing the NDP of forcing Hydro to pursue the "wasteful" western route. "Obviously the board isn't doing its job currently and they need to be replaced."

Yeah...that's logical.

They switched from the east side to the west side at the drop of a hat.. why could they not switch back just as fast?

Right, but that switch was made years ago. Assuming zero work had gone on between then and now, it wouldn't make any difference going back to the opposite side. But what's happened since then that needs to be repeated? My assumption is that both sides haven't been going through detailed planning in parallel all this time and that when Hydro was told the East side was not a possiblity they didn't do any further work on it. Maybe they did. My concern is that a switch will slip the project and all the rounds of consultation will need to start over.

ahh.. yeah.. true true.. especially with the article today with 5 bands and the winnipeg foundation starting fundraising to push for the unesco certification.

.. yeah I can totally see all the people living on reserve putting money towards that project eh?
