My email:
Message:
With the recent change of Nassau Street to one-way north from McMillan to Gertrude, traffic has now patterned itself to use the backlanes parallel to Nassau instead to navigate southward.

Fire trucks use the backlanes as well as driving the wrong way on Nassau to reach McMillan now, as evidenced by their action attending to the fire at 584 McMillan yesterday (Nov.14/10).

Is this new traffic patterning the intended purpose of the changes to Nassau street, and, if not, what is the city doing to rectify this situation?

When I heard the sirens coming, we were anxious to see how the fire trucks would navigate the traffic circle at Nassau and Gertrude, so we went outside to look.

Well, the first two trucks stopped at Nassau briefly, then went ahead another 100 feet or so, and then turned down the back lane to get to McMillan. Nassau has now become one-way north from McMillan to Nassau so they didn't want to go the wrong way on Nassau I presume.

When other trucks came, some did the same while others disregarded the one-way signs on Nassau and went down the street the wrong way.

The situation was chaotic.

I cannot believe just how little thought went into these changes.

I emailed 311 to ask if this was the intent when the changes were made. I can't wait for a reply.

Interesting thought....

When damages are assessed for a fire, they add the costs of all things, including the fire trucks, police, ambulances, and even the water used.

There were seven fire trucks, one ambulance and one police car in attendance yesterday.

They only used one fire truck.

Just say'n....

It was a small two story apartment building btw.

I e-mailed Swandel ( my councillor), Gerbasi (area councillor) and Nixon on this 2 weeks ago.

I got a response from Swandel within 20 min. Haven't heard from Gerbasi or Nixon yet.

I got one back from Gerbasi just now (I emailed her Friday evening) and she said she'd be taking the matter up with the project manager at a meeting today.

I emailed her about the ridiculous amount of traffic that was now using the backlane because of the one-way nonsense.

Can't wait for an update....but I sure ain't holding my breath.

Heh...the only way to get to River/Osborne's parking lot is down a backlane.

heh true.. But I was trying to FIND that backlane and ended up going down the wrong one a couple of times because there was so much traffic going down them it MUST be the right one.

FYI.. WHAT A FREAKIN MORONIC place for a CC parking lot.

Came across that Nassau traffic circle that dead-ends for the first time the other day. It really only added about a minute to my drive, needing to take a left to pembina instead, but it was a bit of a surprise. I didn't really notice, but did they take out the bump-outs when they put the traffic circles in?

They did take out the bump outs out sorta...they put big curby islands in and smaller bump out type thingy to move vehicles over to the middle of the road (I think).

I'll be going thru one tonight....I'll let you know how it goes.

I thought it would be fun to setup a webcam on a few of these and have live streaming entertainment to anyone that wanted to watch...then I realized how impractical that would be living several blocks away from the nearest one....we gotta find someone who lives right near one to set something like this up.

I've gone through a few....no problemo for meo.

Heh...I did notice vehicle tire tracks on Nassau, where the bike lane is...seems cars are disregarding the signs and going the wrong way down the street....better than speeding down the lane.

I had planned to.

I did voice concern about the traffic circles on Grosvenor after a snow storm such as this. If peeps survive those circles from hell through this weekend perhaps my concern was misplaced.

From:
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breaki ... 49149.html

And to answer a question on the minds of Winnipeggers since traffic circles were placed on newly created bikeways: Yes, some snowplows had problems navigating around the structures. In River Heights, a truck plow attempting to clear Grosvenor Avenue struggled around one traffic circle, reversed and finally bumped into a signpost.

I didn't find the Grosvenor circles too bad yesterday or today. People seemed to be using them correctly for a change because they were slowed down to reasonable speeds.

Heh...funny you should mention that.

I've been looking for cyclists around Nassau since this was for their benefit....and found that there are only tire tracks from cars in the snow....

....and for over a week now, I have not seen one single cyclist.

That's raw.

I love the response! good , valid critique, but he misses the points I made.
Drivering was referring to when they were in the North End only! I am not going to try and find out the wisdom around the 18 minute market, and the point of leaving my real email address up is to get spam offerings, which I do.
I have so little to do, spam oferings are the high-light of my day! lol
My wife answered one of those, and I benefitted by over $4750.00 one time! That is true. I have cheques made out to me for $48,000 , $9700.00 , $28,000.00 all hanging up at my office at work!
They make great wallpaper and are a pretty good conversation piece!
Did you read the report of the snowlow that was trying to clean one of the round-a-bouts, backed up and took out a stop sign? That was on Grosvenor. That is funny!

I discovered another one of these gems this past weekend. Alexander Avenue runs parallel to Logan, which is a main street. Between McPhillips and Weston Road, 3 small streets connect Logan to Alexander, being Blaine, Winks and Yeomans. There is now a traffic circle at Winks and Alexander, which replaces the stop signs which would have stopped traffic crossing Alexander.

As Alexander is a residential street, traffic is minimal, so why is the traffic circle needed there? Why would the same criteria not apply to Blaine and Yeomans?
