It's my understanding that disabled student enrollment is way up and they don't have the resources to handle it.

This may sound insensitive, but the simple fact is it costs money to meet these folks needs. Instead of bitching be grateful Canadian society is so very generous.

I'm confused that reduction, or lack of services for disabled students is a violation of human rights. Is a university education a "human right"? What about those who can't afford it? What about those who just don't have the smarts to do it? Are their human rights being violated?

“This is an issue of basic fundamental human rights,” Loewen said. “The university has an obligation to provide access and services to students so they can study.”

We are in ffuckken trouble with idiots like this as Profs.

The U of W is putting out Commie Bastards like never before eh?

...and another thing....

If the place is wheelchair accessible, why would it cost more to teach a dissabled student.

Does the prof use more expensive words?

actually.. yes... we are not talking just physically (ie in a wheelchair) students, hearing and vision impaired students attend and i imagine perhaps even some similar to Mr Hawking

I don't begrudge these peeps anything. In fact I'm all for it. But our society has become so "entitled" it infuriates me.

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/disabled-services-cut-103776964.html

The University of Winnipeg is under fire for slashing services for disabled students, weeks after it launched a new degree program devoted to the "critical analysis of disability in society."

Really? REALLY??? thats a degree program? REALLY?

I have no problem building infrastructure for disabled.

Wheelchair ramps, limited mobility access points, braille buttons on doors & elevators, etc.

Even TDY telephones (though that's usually free from MTS when payphones are installed).

But some things most disabled people can get through other means, other social services which provide for disabled. Audio translators, visual aides, special text books. And typically with little-to-no cost for the student (or a reimbursement).

There also needs to be limitations based on some logical evaluation...

A person with CP is extremely unlikely to become a neuro-surgeon...so courses related to that should not need to adapt for that disability.

Certain disabilities will preclude people from being able to do certain things. It's just part of life. So adapting every course to accommodate every student is just unreasonable.

Yeah I was just wondering that.. why are these services coming out of Uni budget? They should be coming from somewhere else and therefore not subject to budget cuts.

Good Post!

Good Post!

to both above...

I'm wondering if the 'disabled' stuff is a profit center for the university.
