David Asper: Sports are part of culture and deserve to be funded

By David AsperThe hubbub created by Stephen Harper’s suggestion that the federal government might be open to funding Quebec City’s new hockey arena is based on an unstated premise: that taxpayer money should never be used to support professional sports. This is a premise that I dispute. What is missing is a discussion of the fundamental question: What constitutes “culture”?

Ya know, he does have a point. If governments invest in art and music and the like should they not invest in sport venues? That said steve has attempted to reduce spending in those areas.

BUT, dave should have said that he wants the three levels of government to build him a stadium up front. No shenanigans or back-room games. Then we could debate the merits if building an arena and leave the hyperbole and unrelated BS out of the picture.

Where does "culture" begin and where does it end?

Here's something that I would to know. How much does government spend on "culture"? How many millions or tens of millions a year? That figure would include sports, arts, and language, at least.

If government got out of all "culture" spending, we might have more money in our pockets to support those cultural institutions that we want, rather than what government wants. And none of this BS about we are the government. If we really were, we'd have plebicites to decide such spending.

I hate big government. It's bloated and inefficient. I like people being able to decide for themselves what to spend their money on.
