A report from city staff to council is recommending the plan and notes that two public consultations held with area residents over the summer found the majority supported the idea.

WTF? last I checked these courses were for the ENTIRE city to use.

Kinda a little crazy that they lease the propery... but then lease the clubhouse back to the city??

What the hell for? Where is the profit for the city?

It's only nine holes, mostly seniors and beginners...

Why not just sell them the golf course in its entirety?
what the hell is the City in the golf business for anyway?

How does this get into the public domain? Isn't this an agreement with a private company and the City?

Wonder how fast the developer of this fancy spa will pull out, now knowing that this park is a place for young people to hang out, drink and stab one another.

There is a spa at the Kelburn golf course, another 9 holer, but I don't think they have done well or are still in business.

Probably because it is not a very well know golf course. This is the first time I have ever heard of it and I have golfed at almost every course in the city and most within an hours drive both north and south.

Crescent Drive is an awesome course.

I've hosted 3 tournaments there over the past few years.

It's a great little par-3, 9-hole course...PERFECT for kids to learn on.

I'm not sure a spa is the right thing for that location...and as far as a new clubhouse...SOMETHING was being built there last summer when I played...some new building going up near the existing clubhouse.

The only downside to the course right now, is that they no longer have a liquor license, nor a food vendor on site.

I hear ya on the liquor license thing at Crescent Drive. My womens soccer team had our annual golf game there on Saturday and when we were informed that there was no liquor available, we actually contemplated leaving. The kid in the shop held us some tee times to allow us to run to the vendor and get our beer and then we were able to tee off half hour late. And yes I agree, Crescent Drive is a great course for the kids to learn at. As for the spa thing, it wouldn't matter either way to me as I most likely would only frequent the golf course once a year if that.

finally a break down on the money being made

The lease will generate $25,000 a year for the city in rent and $80,000 a year in taxes, according to a city report.

And thats it. yeah, city is getting taken for a ride on this for sure.... have to wonder exactly why this is even being considered.

I think this is a great idea. The city does not ever need to be running a business. If these folks can make it an attraction then yippee...

JTF wrote:...perhaps because $105K is better than nothing?

but its not JTF.

the contract is for 25 years or basically 2.6 million.

At that time the lease is ended. So what will the city do then? Oh right... the buildings are theirs at that point. Hmm I wonder how much work a 25 year old spa would require to bring it back up to shape to get someone else to attempt to run it?

bets on it being MORE then 2.6 million??

I would asssume that within the 25 year period, maintenance and repairs were carried out, but, in any event, who cares.

The facility wasn't their expense anyway.

After the term is over, do it again or whatever.

Its thinking like that, that gives us deals like Asper stadium

but of course the stadium reverts back to us in 25 years... when it needs major upgrades and repairs.

Why do you assume that everything will need extensive repairs after 25 years?

Besides, you will have to spend a hellava lot of time trying to convince me that our old stadium is falling down.

Thing of it is, I cant because I dont believe it. But obviously "everyone else does" or else why are we throwing so much money at it?

So the latest bent is from Russ Wyatt, taking the anti-Quebec stance on this issue...

Can't say I disagree with Wyatt on the un-equality front...

eh.. I dont see the Quebec part as the real problem. We cant invest in many countries, yet accept money from investments..

Quebec does have protectionist policies, even between provinces. Can't see how it has a great impact on the Manitoba economy.

How did the rfp manifest itself? We rfps issued and this one chosen?

no
this company came forward and said.. let us do this.

that was it

to me, anytime that CITY land is being used, an RFP should have been tendered.

Maybe. How though should the city have handled the offer?

Great idea proposed to city. City agrees it's a great idea. City then takes the great idea and issues an rfp.

In short order peeps with great ideas stop offering them to Winnipeg.

Catch 22 eh?

RFP for spa ( with some details of what it wants)
