Pothole patching crews will be working extended hours throughout July to speed up repairs to Winnipeg's streets.

The city announced yesterday that the four-week "blitz" is meant to get pothole repairs finished as quickly as possible, adding the extra effort is not expected to push pothole patching costs beyond the $1.6-million budget the city had already set for 2009.

To report a pothole to the city, call 311 or e-mail the pothole's location to 311@winnipeg.ca.

The city also announced yesterday it has begun summer street sweeping about a month early this year in response to a difficult spring that saw more sand than usual left over from a winter of heavy sanding.

I wonder how these potholes are being repaired. I've noticed several along the routes I drive daily have been filled in with asphalt. While that takes care of the problem for now, we can be assured that pothole will reappear next spring.

We save money today with patchwork fixes. Only to repeat the process the next year. At what point does the city decide when to make the repairs properly?

the city engineers actually have an analysis of all the roads in the city and at what point it would be best to replace them instead of just little repairs. Only so much money to go around and often politics comes in to play and trumps the schedule they have.

That machine they use is a friggn' joke.

Actually their efforts seem to be pretty usless in all respects.

The city cut two holes in my street for repairs and have come back twice (so far) to repair the patches. These were done the regular way.

Problem seems to be the new asphalt sinks and the hole appears again. Perhaps compacting the material would help? Duh!!!

The patch work is a joke at best.

Some dude in the back of a truck tosses a shovel or two worth of asphalt while someone else hops out and tamps it down with another shovel, then they drive off.

Wonderful fix boys...keep it up.

There are plenty of fine examples of pothole repair we have around here....some are repaired several times a year, for years on end.

One in fact, by my work, happened to have been completely ripped out when they re-paved intersection. However the following spring, the very same spot had come unglued and there is a nice new pothole, that's been patched twice already!

In this case, the problem hasn't been fixed....the problem is water pools in that low spot...which they could have fixed when the intersection was re-paved...instead, they just paved over top and went home. Fixed!
